I've been on this forum since 2006 but haven't really been active in over a year. Just want to know if anyone here uses Twitter and can recommend any Twitter accounts of Model RR manufacturers, publications or modelers who are on Twitter that I could follow?

    Thanks

Nope......don't do Tweeter, Facebook, blog stuff or any of that stuff. About the only thing I do online is check a couple of YAHOO! groups (N Scale Yard Sale) I'm in, check in here at Trainboard, occasionally look at YouTube, and browse eBay some. I don't have or need to be wasting time online, I've got a much better way to spend my time and that's working on the INDIANA RAILWAY. Time spent online is that much time less I have for my railroad.
I know some people live by Tweeter, Facebook, etc. etc. NOT ME! I could care less what somebody else had for lunch or wears out on the town. Maybe these sites have some good things on them, but I'll pass.

Thank heavens ... I was beginning to thing I was the only person on the planet who could see the emperor is butt naked :)

But on a serious note, does the MR world really move fast enough to be worth 'Tweeting'. I think most modellers may still use monthly magazines for their 'news'.

Twitter... Been there, done that. It got very annoying very quickly so I tweet no more.

Good old RSS feed should be enough to quickly spread news on the model RR industry and hobby.

    My opinion, but........

Don't tweet, chirp, cackle, squawk,or crow. IMO, Twitter is the electronic flavor-of-the-month. I do have Facebook, and I belong to several Yahoo groups as well as Trainboard.

    Just not into Twitter myself.

Interesting point and a good one, too. I think your statement does describe my approach to the hobby that gives me enjoyment partially because I am not in any hurry to get things done. I don't do any tweeting either.

I do not tweet things, but I do have a twitter account. I love to use it to follow things I find interesting. mostly local news, breaking news, weather, and a few people that I find interesting or entertaining. it all goes to my BlackBerry via the UberTwitter app. so while I'm flying RC planes, I can get weather alerts and updates, or stuck somewhere waiting for a client or meeting or just bored, I can check news, breaking news or look at the other interesting updates.

I do not do Facebook. IMO it's too involved and too high school.

I don't Tweet, Face or whaterver either, but when I attended Trainfestival this year I finally thought of a truly valid purpose for Twitter - broadcasting the status of the train runs!

I had (along with about 100 other guys) found a great spot to photograph 4449 on the way back to Owosso, MI. I estimated a good time to be at the location - and was off by over 90 minutes! Did they leave late? Did they break down? I didn't know they would be doing a couple of photo runbys.. What's happening? Meanwhile it's hot, I'm thirsty... I'm thinkin' "Wouldn't it be nice if there was some way to know where the train was..."

I actually called my wife and asked her to go to the web site that broadcast the GPS location of 4449 traveling cross-country, but that was disabled after it arrived at the Trainfestival.

We have just launched Facebook Fan Pages and Twitter accounts for a couple of our websites. We don't expect to 'Tweet' much, but we figured since we only update our site once a month or so, it would be a good way to communicate to those that were interested when we had fresh content up instead of checking the site daily.

I was following sp#4449 all the way out to trainfest and back to mpls on Twitter. I saw the updates so I knew when it was getting close to Mpls on the way out. it stayed here in the #261 "shed" for a few days before heading out to trainfest. The twitter updates were awesome. I knew when it was getting ready to leave, on the move, and they posted a few photos along the way too. all live and sent to my BlackBerry in real time! nice!

Hi, all. This is my first post on this board in a long while. Hopefully I can be more active and visit more often...

Anyway, I personally don't Twitter, Facebook, etc. I used to have a website for posting family photos, etc, but I found it a chore to keep up with it, so I abandoned that. I think I understand Twitter, but I don't think it's something I'll ever use. I get kind of annoyed with all the hype over it. It is kind of a flavor of the month, but I think it is a definite advance in communications/media, so it's probably here to stay - maybe not the brand "Twitter" itself, but the phenomenon of "microblogging," which is what Twitter is.

That being said, I can see how Twitter could be useful in our world. The examples cited above fall in line more with railfanning than model railroading. Twitter might be used in model railroading to post updates on an operating session in progress, so others not at the session could follow along with what's happening on the layout. It could also be used to coordinate a real time operating session among several modelers using their own home layouts simultaneously (i.e. each individual layout being a puzzle piece of the overall system). It could also be used to post updates on events at a train show (model railroad expo). Someone else above mentioned that store owners could use it to update customers when they updated their website, or when they received a new item, or news from a vendor/manufacturer.

I'm sure there are other uses out there. Given the current demographics of the model railroading world, not sure how many people would really use it for model railroading purposes. Maybe in another 10-15 years that will be different.... who knows?

I don't use Twitter and don't see much use for it unless I get a blackberry/iPhon/Pre and use ti to track trains as described.

I do use facebook and there are a couple model railroad groups on there though I don't see any as popular as this site.

Facebook and for that matter Yahoo, are little too general interest for me to compete with a place like this.

I just found this Twitter account:

    http://twitter.com/TheHobbyGuy

He seems to blast out several hobby-related posts an hour, and it encompasses everything from RC cars to airplanes to military models. But a good percentage of his Tweets are model railroad-oriented.
