Are you thinking of something which still exists?

Washington Central Railroad, as came about in the 1970's, was bought back by BNSF and re-merged c.1995.

Boxcab's right, except in that they started up in 1986 (not the 1970's). The railroad principly operated a portion of the old NP Stampede Pass line in and around and then west from Yakima, Washington, along with some branchlines. BNSF did buy the company when they wanted to reopen Stampede Pass in the mid-1990's. BNSF did not want the entire company, though, and the Temple Family (Washington Central's owners) got to keep some of the branchline trackage, which they now operate as the Columbia Basin Railroad.

And this why the Interbay roundhouse switcher is a Washington Central SW9 or 12 nicknamed freckles.

Yes. Typo, induced by having a bad day, and requiring heavy doses of pain killers. 1986 is correct.

I remember chasing them that year. And also the locals delight by their paint scheme... Their main line began at Pasco, actually extended as far west as the wye at Easton. However, there was no business on the part of the line, so they only occasionally went to Cle Elum.

I'm trying to find my ETT. Should have one or two...
