We rode up to LaCrosse and back. We even got to ride the little C&O speeder. Excellent trip. Sorry about the job.

Well, they only need $1,500,000 to get her going. A real shame. Wouldnt it be sweet to see that happen? CSX, where are you? Just think of the goodwill you would create. Oh, I forgot, its all about the money. They had a really big turnout at North Judson for the 765. does my heart good to see that. Here is her website.

I am planning to try to go to Owosso, MI if at least for no more than a day! To see all of these steamers fired up and running in one location! If one is to go by North Judson can one get access to take a few photos of the 2789? I always try to take photos of any C&O power I have not gotten yet...this being one.

You mention CSX and goodwill....that'll be the day! You got to remember that CSX has former NS officials in their ranks now and caring about goodwill is something that is NOT in NS's playbook. It's all about the money to them, they look at their employee's, which I am one of, as a liability, not an asset. NS does not even take care of their fleet of locomotives much less want to spend money on a steam program. The only class 1 carrier that has any class left at all would be UP in my book and I have been saying for almost years now that I hope UP buys NS someday on account of steam operations and the possibility we would see them again on the east coast. One can only hope....please UP buy NS...NOW!

A friend of mine was talking to me about this and N&W's steam program was headed down the tubes when Claytor, a "real" railroader, NOT a lawyer like Goode was/is, was when the steam program ended. Now folks will be quick to point out the "big" derailment of the 611...big deal derailments happen all the time...this was just the scape goat to end their steam program. CSX not sure the mentality there when they ended steam...but I guarantee you there were a bunch of lawyers around calling the shots, NOT, "real" railroaders! You might wonder what a real railroader was or is...someone that came up through the ranks...not a college paper yielding lawyer. I am done ranting now!

    Dave,
I will be in Owosso on Sunday July 26th to ride 765 all day. Let me know if you are going that day. Would be glad to meet a fellow C&O fan. Also, I spoke extensively with one of the volunteers at North Judson. I was very curious just how they got 765 from the east side of Fort Wayne to North Judson. I was told CSX would have nothing to do with them but that evfentually there was a connection track laid to NS and NS got it over there. Being a former shortline guy I know the railroad mentality, especially class ones and was shocked that NS would do it. Also am curious how they will get 765 to Owosso. I would have loved to have seen 765 being moved over NS track. Can you imagine the looks it must have gotten? As far as getting a good look at 2789 all I can say is to contact the museum and see what they say. I think they rolled her out for the special occasion of having her sister there last saturday. If only 765, 1225, and 2789 could all be running at the same time at the same place someday. One can dream.....One of the more pleasant suprises last saturday was running into my former boss at Central Rairoad of Indianapolis, Henry Weller. Henry actually ran a few passenger trains in his days as CEO. Based in Kokomo Indiana, CERA ran a train from Kokomo to Peru Indiana and back for Peru Circus City Days. You could take the train to Peru, watch the circus and then ride back. Another time they had a train take passengers to the county fair in the next town over. And I believe they had a live steamer there from Logansport once. Ah, the old days..

so how fast is that Cheasapeake and Indiana railroad that the 765 ran on??

Too bad they didnt run it on the Indiana Eastern, cause they have heavy welded rail, but of course it would have had to travel on CSX to get there...

Im guessing 15 to 20 mph tops. C&I is an actual shortline with limited income for track maintanace. But good enough for 765. I was actually a smooth ride.
