I'm trying to replace couplers, especially on my locos, with MT couplers. I have a phillips screwdriver #0000 but it's not small enough. I end up using a pen knife blade and scrape up things. Is there a smaller one? Where do I buy one? Thanks.
Harbor freight has sets of tiny screwdrivers, they're in an orange or yellow plastic box,I think they're 4 bucks..The small Phillips easily fits Atlas coupler screws..
HARBOR FREIGHT has some, but if you want to get a little better quality, go to; Micro-Mark: The Small Tool Specialists for the home page and then head to :Screwdrivers & Nutdrivers for the selection they carry. There are some REALLY fine ( read EXPENSIVE) screwdriver sets around, it all depends on the quality of screwdrivers you want. I always try to buy quality tools from the git-go.
You might want to check either Sears or your local hardware store. Look for the Wiha brand. They're a German company and make exceptional tools. Sears also carries a brand that compliments their Craftsman brand. You might even want to try Lowes or Home Depot in the tools section. Rich
i found the small screwdriver to fit these at home depot. it comes in a set of one phillips and one flat head. the flat head is red and the phillips is blue. works great for those little screws.
I believe this jeweler screw driver from Sears may solve your problem. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00912829000P?keyword=jeweler+screw+driver+set&sLevel=0
hey, folks, I really appreciate all the replies, but I have checked out all those suppliers and none carry anything smaller than a #0000. Maybe I got a bad #0000 phillips; the end is just a tad blunt, but it makes all the difference. It is a Craftsman. And, yeah, it's those Atlas locos that have teeny screws in them. Jeez! I'll keep searching; thanks again.
I use the Harbor Freight set on those Atlas coupler screws all the time,I did a few sets today..They're not junk..A few years ago,I bought a Stanley set that was 10 bucks at WalMart, the HF ones are the EXACT same screwdrivers, just a different color!!
#0000 screw driver I have seen very few screw drivers that are #0000 s. Most of the time the smallest that you can find is a #000. I did find a #0000 at Sears. The #0000 was very blunt and did not fit the small srews I was working with, so I had to sharpen the tip so it would fit into the small screws. BTW you will have to use a diamond type file to sharpen the tip of the screw driver has in most cases they are very hard. They have been heat treated.
woodone, that's exactly what I just did this afternoon. I'm disappointed a screwdriver that is supposed to be a good brand turns needing this kind of filing. But it works. I think I'm going to stop by HF tomorrow and see what they have. Have to take my magnifying loupe along.
I will put another vote in for the Wiha sets. I have been using a 7 piece set since I got back into Model Railroading. It has 00, 0 , and 1 Phillips, and 4 straight blade from 1.5 x 40 up to 3.0 x 60. I have not found anything that they will not remove. Coming from the RC side of things, I am a firm believer in spending a little more on tools that last and don't strip out your hardware. All of my allen wrenches are machined drill blanks in an aluminum handle, not the standard black hardened wrenches. I don't like having to drill out stripped hardware.
