Caleb, I was hunting through the forums to find exactly this kind of inspirational and educational thread. Your work is incredible.

If there was ever a reason for a first post here it is ... I'm not affiliated with these folks at the link I'm about to post, but if you decided you'd like to do this kind of thing for a living you might consider approaching them with a detailed portfolio of pics from this process, your thought process, etc.

    http://www.custommodelrailroads.com/

These folks make a living at it and frankly, while they're excellent, I think you're better than they are!

I'm about to get into model railroad, N scale, and while I doubt my layouts will come anywhere close to yours, I'm not ashamed to say I'll be trying to copy as much of your technique as I can.

    Keep up the fantastic work!

    Jim

    Awesome work as always Caleb!

It looks like the tunnel's not yet attached to the benchwork. If that's the case, you're in luck. That will make it easier to color the tunnel liner.

    I'm back!

Sorry I've been neglecting this thread for the last two months, though I have my excuses. Friends have been staying with me almost constantly for the last six weeks, I went on a week long river trip in Utah and on beautiful summer days like this, its hard to work down in the basement.

But have been able to get some work done. Here's how the little rock tunnel scene has progressed.

First, the tunnel was built into the hill with plaster, then two layers of dirt were applied, one was a basic light brown dirt and the other was a red colored soil I found in Utah. Then paint was used to help blend the colors.

Looking away from the tunnel. I still need to build the hills along the backdrop.

Now the first layers of of landscaping have been applied, static grass and leaves where the forest will be. I also re-carved some of the tunnel portal and wall.

Another thing I picked up in UT was some sagebrush twigs. I used some pieces here to create a dead tree.

Now more ground cover has been added along with some trees.

And now this photo was taken today. I still need to add more trees and underbrush but its getting there.

I'll try post updates as I work again now that things aren't so busy.:)

    Thanks all. :)

Its probably 90% done at this point. All that's really left is to add the small details, like these tiny super tree bits I added today.

    And here's a shot with a train.
