My wife has been chomping at the bit to buy me something for Valentine's Day (Man is she a keeper or what!) and I have decided its time to get some nice drill bits.

I would like to buy them from drill bit city with the nice handles and colored size indicators....but I am unsure what kit/sizes are most used.

Generally, I do very little detailing of locos etc (might if I had some bits though!) but would definately need some for drilling holes in locos/cars to install micro-trains couplers.

What sizes would you buy if you were starting over? #80's are a given, but what else.

Also, what sizes are used for installing screws through micro-trains coupler boxes into the frame of the car/loco? Do you need to also tap them or do you get self tapping screws? What size of screws are used? Where do you obtain your screws?

    Phew......hope y'all can help!

    Just My $.02 Worth

Micro-Mark has a couple of different bit kits in their catalogs; what I'D do is look at their better sets and then make up a comparable set selection from Drill Bit City, and make sure that Beautiful Keeper you've got (Sounds like my Own Reason for Being!) sees your list in time to order them in!
Just out of curiousity: Have you built HER train yet? You know, the one with the Pink 4-8-4, Crimson heavyweight Passenger consist complete with Lighting kits, and SOUND?
    What's keeping you?
Or does she prefer freight operations?
MY own Special Lady runs HER stuff at Christmas - in HO, so she evicts my N-scale layout in November and sets her stuff up. Oh ,well.

You will need the smallest you can get. I would suggest a good pin vise, as well. Take a look at the micormark catalogue and be aware that you will not need a whole array of different sizes, but rather a few each of the sizes you will need.

Many years ago I purchased a good pin vise to hold the different sized drill bits. I routinely use about 6 different size drill bits.

Well...so far I have been able to appease her train needs with more protypical locos for the WM and NKP that I am modeling.....SO I guess the Readers Digest Answer is no.
Honestly though, she basically leaves me in my own little world by myself (and by that I mean the spare bedroom I took over) most of the time. She does come in and check on me from time to time though! I guess to make sure I am not getting ready to knock out walls to extend the empire for the Elkins subdivision!

She did mention last night as I was working on my first lazer cut wooden bridge kit, that it looked cute when I put the John Deere Model "B" tractor on it. I'll take that as a sucess!

It wouldn't hurt to have a #85 drill.

Ok guys...What sizes would those be exactly? What do you use each most for?

What do you use that one for mostly Bob?

    Thanks!

MicroTrains sells a kit for installing body mount couplers that contains the proper drill bits and tap for thier screws. When you order thier body mount couplers you will also get the screws to mount them. You will need a pin vice to use them though. Happy Modeling!:tb-biggrin:

A #85 is nice for installing windshield wipers. I find that the #80 gives to big of a hole. Also use it for grab irons.

I find that a good #61-80 set will do you nicely, with maybe a #85 for those microscopic detail parts.

Model Railroading Is Fun (MRIF). Actually if you have the right friends you don't need any drill bits :)

True. Unfortunately I am a lone wolf modeler in South Eastern Illinois. Thank goodness for the internet and internet retailers!

What pin vice is a nice one? I was looking at some from Zona hobby tools, but was unsure what would be the best/would work with the Micro Trains Bits?

Which one of these would work well : http://www.nscalesupply.com/zon/ZON-Pin-Drills.html
    ?

    Thanks

That's precisely the same one I use. I love it!

I find that if you chuck your tiny bits in so that only enough bit sticks out to just break thru the material you're working, that you break fewer bits. Flexibility is not a #80 bit's best virtue!

Hemi.....I am going to have to ask you not to use my name IN VAIN!

P.S. good advice though on the bits!

That's why I bought twelve dozen packs with twelve in each pack of #80 drill bits.
