    Man,

I am on a roll with questions today!

I saw a post (and now i cant find it) about making a river and modge podge was suggested as the river material.

I saw some in the local craft store and bought a small ammount to try. What are the tips as far as useage, creek/river floor color, etc for a good looking small body of water.

spread with a brush in layers?

    Thanks all

    Chuck:thumbs_up:

Modge Podge has been mentioned in the MR. I think it was the special GMR 2009. Someone used it for making water.

My wife uses it for fixating paper on wood. Maybe a good idea?

You can spread the Modge Podge on the cured water in thin layers with a small brush. (18/0). Let each layer dry thoroughly.

I use Mod Podge spread on with a 2" wide brush, letting each layer dry as Bob said. Have had some bubbles to pop up, but are under the bridge and not really visible.

Well if any nickpickers bugger you about the "bubbles" I have a few ready answers:

    1. divers, place a dive flag on the surface,
    2. methane gas,
    3. fish farts.
    4. underground stream entering the river.

Anyone else with a few jewels of ideas??

I'm in a humerous mood, must be the meds, man!

Am I correctly reading this? Modge Podge is used on top of a water making matireal such as mat medium? It is used to provide surface effects?

    Thanks

Mod Podge is a product of Plaid Enterprises and found in art and craft stores as well as Wakmart and other such stores. It is essentially a refined white glue. It comes in two finishes, a Matte -Mat finish otherwise known as matte medium and a gloss. If you want to do the water effects you need the gloss finish not the matte finish. Beware in using this as being basically a white glue it is water soluble. Care must therefore be taken when cleaning the water surface less you remove more than just dust or dirt.

No, no, no! You paint your surface to look the way you want it to look. Usually very dark green to black to represent deep water, tan to light green to represent shallow areas or the shore line/river banks. There is a lot of information about this part of modeling water in Dave Frary's books on scenery. Either first or second editions. Not real great on third edition.

The basics are that once you get the colors the way you want, then cover with gloss modge podge to give it the "wet" look. Working the modge podge to create ripples & waves is pretty difficult, but not impossible. Much easier though to get some "gloss medium gel" which is considerably thicker and holds its shape much better while drying. After its dry, dry-brush with white the wave tops or white caps. This pretty much comes out just perfect. Painting is the key. The Modge Podge is the magic!

OK, looking at those pictures, I think I will 'borrow' the Modge Podge from my wife and use it for my new river. I have always used glossy varnish and that also gives a nice wet look. Time for some change.

Another trick to add gloss to water is to use Future acrylic floor wax. It really shines ...

After seeing the work product in this thread, I am going to reconsider what I WAS going to use for my small harbor and take a serious look at Modge Podge. It is a heck of a lot cheaper than the other stuff.
