I saw another item that was, ahem, optimistically priced, and had $11.25 shipping. Then I checked and it was cross-country via FedEx Ground, so that $11.25 was probably right. For one thing, FedEx charges almost three dollars for a "residential delivery."

Certainly makes the USPS seem like a bargain in comparison, even though rates are going up again in January.

BMan, you're spot on about the CMW trucks going "package rate." According to USPS rules, if an envelope is more than 1/4 inch thick, it's a "package."

I don't think any items I've seen multiple times are anywhere near their tenth anniversary, but I definitely recognize "reruns" from time to time.

Often the seller is asking, ahem, optimistic prices. Shipping is often on the high end of the scale as well.

As long as it's under 50 total listings a month, it's free to the seller to list, and only takes a couple of clicks... fewer than ever now that eBay provides for automatic re-listing up to three consecutive times.

Once of these days someone will get the memo... or not, figuring that eventually someone is going to come along that just HAS to have that overpriced Atlas car (as one example).

But I have to tell you, it's getting hard to top the Amazon.com sellers for chutzpah. There's a book my wife is looking for that came out earlier this year so it's hardly a "rare vintage collectible". Amazon would sell it for about $16 if they had it in stock, but they don't. So the, ahem, opportunistic sellers are out there. The lowest price I've seen from a third party is $98 with the highest price being over four thousand dollars! For that much I could probably have the author write another book just for my wife!

And this interesting note from the description: "If no one is interested in all these items or at least willing to make a reasonable offer, we will just dispose of it all."

So they'd rather throw it away then sell it for what they want for it. Interesting.

Fascinating attitude? Or twisted selling technique?

I find it interesting that they want the moon for what appears to be a bunch of JUNK. Yet rather than someone make an offer more what the stuff is worth, they would rather throw it away. Dont forget you have some "mystery boxes" in there too of who know what kind of junk.

If it was me......I would take as many photos as I could of the items and seperate them if needed. I would think the seller could get a few hundred bucks out of the stuff rather than the $3,900 they are asking.

    But hey.....what do I know.

I agree with Logtrain, but at the same time the auction ended because 'the item is no longer available' so someone much have bought it. As I recall, they used to do special run cars. Found this on in a search:

Yes, at one time Ak-Sar-Ben was the major supplier of parts for N scale locomotives, stocking parts from Rivarossi, Roco, and MiniTrix. It also did some special run paint jobs, particularly for the New Orleans and Knoxville World's Fairs. It is still in business, but no longer involved in any way with trains, it now does special run truck and trailer models. It's been close to 20 years since it quit the N scale train business. Looks like the nascent stages to build the Plywood Pacific Road.

People will sell anything. I'm thinking about listing todays sack of kitchen trash as a craftsman kit for freight cars, useable for any scale....

The plywood chunk might be worth $10 or even more, depending on thickness and condition.

If you read through the novel which is the auctions description there's all kinds of interesting early n-scale tid-bits. I never knew Athearn painted the early Atlas n-scale freight cars. It's also mentioned the after KD stopped selling Aksarben undecorated cars in bulk, Al would order a couple hundred of a KD car from a distributor only to strip it and repaint them. It's possible that some of the highly collectable KD cars were "rare" because Aksarben bought a few hundred to strip and repaint. Notice I said 'possible', not 'probable'
