Greetings, first let me say that I am a n scaler, but like most got started in HO years ago.my boss recently asked if I could build a 4x8 HO layout for his boys from Santa. The only caveat was he would like two separate loops to avoid arguing. It has been so long since i have built an HO layout, I am struggling to find something that will hold their interest. Also an overall height of 8" above the layout top is necessary as this layout will be hoisted to the ceiling when not in use.I would like to have a double track figure 8 that crosses over itself with each boy having a siding for a team track industry.I could really use ALL suggestions and ideas and trackplans as time is short. Thanks in advance for your help in helping two young boys enjoy our hobby,Jay.

4x8 doesn't offer alot of space for H0, check atlas's plans for a 4x8 they have some decent ones. I'd think that a double oval would offer more space in the center for some sidings and spurs though.

(doodling, crumpling, doodling, crumpling) Hmm..... tough to get 2 seperate but equal railroads on a 4 x 8. Going with smaller radius curves and splitting the grades I was able to push the over/under out to the corners. That allows for interchange tracks between the straights, and a blob at each end for an industrial area. A true figure eight really only has space for an interchange and a small jointly operated industrial area. I'm just not imaginative enough to do more right now. I'll give it some more effort later.

Two young boys? No arguing? Your boss is kidding, right? Good luck to him!!! My two youngest boys are 51 weeks apart (don't ask) and at that close an age I learned early that you had to buy two of everything. When they got to be around ten or so they had different interests and still compete against each other. They're now 22 & 23.

Did he give you a budget? Are you using Atlas track with no roadbed or something with roadbed? I'd suggest Bachmann E-Z Track and screw it down. The 4'x8' framework should be no problem. Another suggestion would be to show your boss some of the options as far as the stuff "we" buy compared to the inexpesive stuff you might want to start young boys out with. We called that the difference between "Cadilac's and Volkswagons" when I worked at "The Great Train Store" in Columbus, Ohio.

Whatever you do, you're going to be limited. How about a regular loop on the outside with 22" radius and another regular loop with 18" radius on the inside with a switch and short piece of track to a building of some type on each side. Also, a single crossover so one could deliver cars to the other. They can take turns as to who runs on what track. A rereailer is helpful for small hands also.

Just keep in mind that they're kids and probably won't care about switching and what goes where. They'll just want to run trains. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions,I think I am leaning toward the oval within an oval idea and a turnout on each line. After that basic configuration, dad and the boys can expand upon that base, adding their own buildings, scenery, etc. I love trainboard for reasons just like this, instant feedback....thanks all!
