There are two GS-4 "War Babies" that will be released on/or about March 2009. SP ran these "Black War Babies" during WWII.

It looks as if the warbabies will still have their skirts. I hope they will go with a skirtless version in the future.

Two more UP SD70ACe numbers...they must have gotten a lot of pre-orders for the first two.

If they do a skirtless GS4 I hope they use the mechanism to do other 4-8-4's, like ATSF.
    I can dream can't I?

Now that the Broadway has come and gone I wonder what's happened to the perennial "What passenger train will Kato do next?" threads. It seems like only yesterday we were speculating on what would come after the Super Chief. We've had a Daylight with GS4 and the Broadway with GG1, what's next on the passenger front?

I'd love to see the SPS 700, another Northern, if they go that route. That would get me one step closer to my Portland steam collection.

The next premiere passenger train has been a mildly confirmed western road, by Kato reps at Trainfest. When asked if it was the El Capitan, the response was "that would be a good one" with a grin from the representative. When a second attendee asked if it was going to be a Western to Mid-Western train the response was "depending on what time of day it is".

Subsequently they will consider a Canadian passenger train following the upcoming western train.

I cannot wait! I really hope it is the VIA Canadian with the FP40H-2 scheme coming also.

Two good choices. The SP skirtless version would require a only a redesign of the loco frame and removal of the skirting. An ATSF 4-8-4 would require considerably more than that. But Kato has the talent if they have the inclination.

I agree with You. That would go along perfect with my canadian railroad layout.

He was just trying to throw us off the scent so he could watch all the Santa Fe fans break down and cry when they announce the 20th Century Ltd or some other obscure eastern train.:tb-biggrin:
A Santa Fe 4-8-4 wouldn't require any more tooling or development than the GS4 initially did, the basic design of the mechanism could be reused. But as you say Kato have to have the inclination, its a pity Santa Fe's 4-8-4's only came in plain black, not the pretty colours of the GS4 that give it more sales potential.

    Still I'll keep dreaming.

Steam era railroading was in black and white. Colorization came later. :tb-cool:

Wouldn't be the first time! Remember how they hinted that they'd be doing GEVO's, only to announce the heritage ACes? Same folks, same song!

Why is it UP treated the modeling world so bad, yet all the sexy releases (Athearn Big Boy, Challenger, FEF, Kato Heritage ACes) are all UP?? What I wouldn't give for a 2900 Santa Fe train!! :tb-ooh:

Were there 'war-baby' Daylight locomotives with the skirts still in place like this? All the photos I have found the skirts are removed, and the lettering is the bigger SOUTHERN PACIFIC type.

I thought the GS-6's were the "War Babies" not the GS-4's.

How about a City of San Francisco with E2's on the point?

More UP?? :) I'd still buy, though... and Kato could probably use existing tooling for the passenger cars...
