Hi, The topic recently came up at work regarding the 2-8-4 at North Judson, In. The question was asked whether the trailing truck under the firebox was "powered" and if so how was the power generated. Any help would be appreciated. A F Niederer CSSSB RR Trainmaster/DSLE
From the book C&O Power "The engines themselves developed a tractive evert of 69,350lbs and were equiped with trailor boosters exerting14,400 lbs for a total tractive effort of83,750 lbs." Fraklin E-1 booster on 2789 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Franklin-Booster.jpg
Oldrk, those are some great old pictorials of the booster engine. New York Central was really big on boosters, all the Hudsons had them, and some freight engines. The steam plumbing to and from them was pretty interesting. Thanks for putting up those informative pix. :tb-biggrin:
C & O 2-8-4 2789 Thanks for the pics. They were a big help in understanding how they were positioned under the locomotives. A F Niederer
Do you mean Hesston? I agree. I try to get out there over the Labor Day festival. They finally got their Shay operating or at least this year was the first time I saw it. Every year it seems to get bigger with more tractors and a lot more people. This year it reminded me of the steam show in Mt. Pleasant, Ia. We used to go in the mid 70's when the CBQ Mark Twain Zephyr was their. I would ride the trolley loop most of the day. I understand their steam show has really grown since then as well. Sorry for the ramble. Again thanks for the info on the trailer booster. AF Niederer
