This is sort of a negative railfan photo post. The folks at Galveston RR museum have recorded the damage to their place caused by hurricane Ike. It will take a long time to load, but if you are interested, it's worth the wait. There are also heartbreaking photos of damage to the nearby aviation museum, but I suppose that's nothing compared to the heartbreak of the survivors whose homes were damaged or destroyed. :tb-sad: Link to the Galveston museum: http://www.galvestonrrmuseum.com/grrm_081.htm
IIRC, the Gold Coast RR Museum took a heavy hit when Hurricane Andrew nailed Florida, with the same results seen in the pics from Galveston. Inasmuch as it's bad to see museums hit, it's far worse to see homes destroyed or damaged.
Devastating....we were there less than six months ago. The photos didn't show the model exhibits and layouts inside the cars. I only pray that they survived being 3-4 feet above the car floors, which are 4-5 feet above the track. The cars did not look as if they had damage, at least from the outside, and I assume the tracks are a good 15-20 feet above sea level......I hope!
That is truly sad. I have a love for both aviation and railroading and hope that they can restore all that was damaged. Ben
I remember visiting there. What surprises me with these pictures is that there is less visible damage than I expected. I wonder how much hidden damage they will find. In any case, it is a tough situation.:eh-shocked:
Really sad to see those photos. When I lived in Houston during the 50's. I used to go to Galveston often for some fishing and other times for girl chasing. It was a lovely town and I miss seeing her the way that I remember.
