Here we have another week of railfan photos highlighting some TrainBoard members and their photos on the RailImages portion of TrainBoard. These are just my opinion of the photos that are representative of our members for this week. As usual, I encourage you to click on the photograph that you like and see more of that member's pictures. I am unable to consider the "My TrainBoard> Pictures and Albums" photos for inclusion in the Photo of the Week selections at this time. I knew this week's pick would be a tough for you Flash, but I am glad to see that you picked this one. Last time before, I had thought of taking this locomotive the last time I was in Burlington-back last fall, but didn't. If you noticed in the background was a westbound coal train passing by. Glad I took it this time and thank you for picking it.
Buddy, I love Hudsons, but have never seen one with a smoke deflector like that one! (and you know I'm just kidding.) Nice choices again, Flash. :tb-biggrin:
Ah, Jim. That is not a smoke deflector or a stack extension, that is an experimental feed water heater. It is located directly above the stack so the exhaust shooting out the top will heat the underside of the water in the tank. It was never successful because of clearance problems and was only used on certain routes where there was adequate overhead room. At least they painted it a nice bright shiny silver.
Good stuff as always, this week. We've got Alcos, steam, the GM&O, and bloody noses! I think we covered the bases!
jeeezzzz!!! And alla time I thought it was an experimental exhaust smoke scrubber!!! Tanks for clearing that up!
