Andersley Western's first steam locomotive, as acquired

This was very quickly taken into the paint shop and emerged like this

I was not happy with the rather heavy ladder on the tender rear, so I will replace it with a scratchbuilt one as soon as I get the time. I may also choose some AWRR standard details, and change all subsequent steam locomotives to conform. (Yes, having bought one, I must have some more!) I am not keen of smokebox door mounted headlights, so will likely move it to the top of the smokebox in front of the chimney. I really like air pumps on the smokebox front, but not sure that would be done on a small loco like this.

I used MTL 1015 couplers and boxes for tender and pilot.

Looks really good [IMG] As an HO scale modeller I'm impressed by the detail that Bachmann have got in such a small model, which I think has been brought out nicely by the new paint job. The window frame now is a great detail that was lost in the gaudy colours before.

Does this mean the AWRR is looking into the excursion/dinner train business? [IMG]

As usual, a very fine loco comes from your paintshop....looks realllllllly good. Are you just backdating or are you running it in an excursion train?

Why did you destroy that fantastic green and red paint job?

A beautiful paint job Alan....wish you lived closer :D I like it much better than the circus green. That's something else I have yet to tackle...airbrush painting.

Excellent work although the green did look good it did look a little toy like IMHO, The new paint scheme looks great.

Sorry John, but I could not live with the green :( We had so many green steam locomotives over here, and it suited them, but to me black definitely looks best on US steam.

Thanks gary. If you need practice with an airbrush, a black steam locomotive is an easy one to start with [IMG]

Thanks Paul. If I had taken the green scheme as my AWRR standard, it would have meant that any subsequent steam locomotive purchases would need to be painted the same  I would rather just paint 'em black ;)

Having acquired one steam loco. I will most likely be looking for more, as I am fascinated by this one! It will be used on excursion trains, but will fill in on local freight jobs. When I get more steam, I may look at running a steam-era session once in a while, just for a change. So I would need to get some 40ft boxcars with roofwalks, reefers, etc. and some cabeese [IMG]

Yknow, I was opposed to it getting repainted, but I will say you've done an excellent job! [IMG]

Alan, did you remove the other paint or did you paint over the green and red?

If you removed the other paint, what did you remove it with?

I discovered that some paint removers attack some glues and some of them will even melt styrene. When you are about to paint a kitbashed steamer you don't want parts suddenly deforming or falling off it. I'm thinking it might be safer just to paint new black over the old black or whatever other colours are on an engine.

Or maybe I'll just keep on using the black sharpie felt tip pen. The vescocity of the ink is miniscule compared to paint.

Alan, you did a great job!
Did you paint the running gear and drivers while they were spinning? If not, how did you keep them from siezing after the paint dried? Assuming that they are not currently siezed ... [IMG]

    Alan,
The best compliment I can pay you is that I had to look at the forum to see if I was in HO or N. I thought I was in HO. Very good!

Gary, I used Scalecoat paint remover as the striping and lettering may have shown through the new finish, but sometimes I just paint over the original. Different plastics can be affected differently by stripper, but I have never had any problems with Scalecoat. In my experience, Kato paint is very difficult to remove, so it is usually painted over.

Hank, I removed the body from the chassis for painting, and hand brushed the chassis parts, including the boiler underside, and the white wheel rims were painted out with a small brush. From the pictures, I think I will tone down the valve gear a bit, as it looks too shiny.

Will, John and Rick - thanks [IMG]
