Hey Jim, Fantastic shots. What is the seperation between the staging tracks and the main in picture 2?

    Thanks,

    JSL

I believe it's right at four inches...it's tight in there but not impossible to work.

The staging area has given me very few problems - that was why all the testing in the early going.

While posting photos from the tour and the hidden places I have been doing other things as well. I added another cell complex:

And made some changes, shallowing up an area that bothered me:

Finally, a MAJOR change out on the main near Caliente:

This last has been a hairy project; it required rewiring one of the two mains for polarity - yes, Virginia, there can be polarity issues with DCC. I plan on adding another set of crossovers over in the main room, and maybe another (GASP!) siding...won't have the wiring issues there since each track is in it's own section.

Thanks to Art's gentle nagging :) I now have access to pretty much all the sounds I need...

Now all I need is the time (and motivation and freedom from honeydos) to make it happen...

After all my years on this earth, I have come to believe that honeydos will be the downfall of mankind since they tend to keep important things from being done.

Hey guys! I am now going to give you guys a great idea for gaining access to all those sounds that you love from your favorite YouTube videos. What I do is use a FireFox extension called Download Helper and the icon looks like three balls or balloons. When you have this installed, you can open a YouTube video and as you are watching the video you will be able to click on the Download Helper icon and save the video as a .flv flash video file. These videos play well with RealPlayer and a few other programs. If there is a certain part of the video that you want and wish to eliminate the rest, you can use a program called Pinnacle VideoSpin to edit out the parts you want and toss what you don't. Then you can take either the full original, or edited section that you want and use another program called AoA Audio Extractor to extract the audio and make either a .wav or a .mp3 out of it. If anyone is interested in a more detailed explanation, post and let me know. I will make a whole how-to thread with pics and such.

P.S. ALL THE PROGRAMS MENTIONED ARE FREE!!!!! DOWNLOAD HELPER IS A FREE FIREFOX EXTENSION AND THE OTHER TWO CAN BE DOWNLOADED FREE FROM CNET.COM.

And as always, beautiful work Jim! I always love seeing what you have to say about this project!

The program I found is also free, called Freemake Video Converter - lets you do lots of things. I will edit the audio using Adobe Audition (I'm an ex-audio engineer...) and them put it together using Windoze Movie Maker...
Of course I need to shoot some first...

    Jim,

As others have said, I am really enjoying your layout and the pictures. Can't wait for the video.

Do you have any HOW-TOs on the 'Wedding Cake Curve'. Asside from the screeninig that you just added.

    Thanks,

    Michael

Michael, I don't. There was nothing fancy about that - it's just a lot of joint compound. I did use a piece of plexiglass I had laying around for a form for the front, but all it was, was a long tedious project. I think it took two months!

    And Eugen, Thanks!

    Thanks Jim!

Just the mention of the plexiglass as a form is helpful. I was wondering how you made it so uniform.

I could have just done it with a palette knife or putty knife, both of which were used, but the plex gave just that much more of a touch of uniformity which I thought it needed....

In the real world, they'd probably have done what they did when they daylighted the tunnels on Cajon - shotcrete the whole thing. But that would have been boring, IMO.

On the wedding cake, did you follow proper earthquake specifications in your design?

    :tb-biggrin: (lol)

Your layout really did come out as interesting as it is wonderful!

Absolutely! Every Step Of The Way! The San Andreas as I recall runs through the area...

    And thanks, David!
