Hi! This showed up on the woo woo woo woo woo woo web site, and looks interesting. Says it's for making mortar lines in plastic buildings that have brick details. It's from the Railroad Builder's Shop. Anyone tried this yet? http://www.some train store.com/Railroad_Builder_s_Shop_s/2162.htm http://www.some train store.com/v/vspfiles/photos/RBS-EZCG-2.jpg
I picked up a bottle of the Turf Green 70 and the Red Sandstone 50 from my LHS a few weeks ago and haven't really had a chance to use it, but did sample the contents as to the texture. It's reallly nothing more than colored clay like substance, thats water soluble. The only reason I bought it cause it was on clearance for $.50 a bottle. But it seems to be accurate description of contents and prob useful for mortar, but I'd use it for base areas around exposed ground areas as I live in GA where theres alot of red clay and was gonna use it near streams.
I have used it and it is easy and looks great when done. I have the used the 'white' colored mortar. I'll get a picture and post in a sec.
This a papermill kit I am working on and used it. Just 'paint' it over the whole brick surfaces, let it dry, and wipe the brick faces, leaving it in the gaps, or 'mortar lines'. Of course, the deeper the lines in the kit, the better. This perticular kits lines are fairly small.
This ones lines are deeper, and wider. You can see the difference between the two. In my opinion, the deeper, wider lines look better. I guess because it really shows more on a kit like this. Hope that helps!
I agree it looks better with the bigger lines,,great job!!!!! reminds me I have building kits coming out the wazoo that need building. Adios Wyatt
Tony, You might give this link a shot. http://forums.railfan.net/forums.cgi?board=NScale;action=display;num=1138825103 George Picyk
I use artist paint, the kind that comes in a tube. I think they are oil based. I also used acrylic paint such as Delta Ceramcoat. A lot more colors to choose from and at times you can pick them up on a clearance sale real cheap. The problem I see with using any mortar enhancing medium is that on some buildings the bricks are way over scale and/or are somewhat oval shaped. Enhancing the mortar lines only brings this discrepancy out more so. Another thing is how noticeable are mortar lines in a brick wall? Up close they are very noticeable but as one backs away they become less so. Any enhancement of the mortar lines should therefore be rather subtle, I think.
Thats all there is to it! I used a dry rag, and in some places, just ran my thumb over the bricks. You will definatly notice a difference in the size of mortar lines per different kits in how the stuff comes off. Just rememeber, if the kit has very fine mortar lines, like the papermill kit, rubbing your finger, a rag, etc. too hard can remove the 'mortar lines' too. But don't despare.....paint more of the stuff over it again and rub lighter next time. Once you get the feel of the stuff, you'll see what I mean.
