In March I've bought a few Proto 2000 boxcars at a show.
Now these cars went into service.

Because my layout is about 1975 these cars should not have their roof walkways. I've enough cars with walkways, still.
So I tried to shorten the ladders. But I found even in a CB&Q book a car with full ladders but without walkway!
Here're the two cars with shortened ladders and a first (?) weathering, as usual, Dullcote, chalk and again Dullcote.

These Proto 2000 cars have nice details. I've filled the holes with left over parts.

They look very good, Wolfgang. I have assembled some Proto 2000 H0 scale kits; they are very nice. Good weathering (rusting?) on the trucks, too.

Over the last weekend I've tried my tasks with this SOO Line caboose. It's from Atlas Trainman and a fake. After buying I discovered that this type never existed at the SOO.

Anyway, I own it and I use it. So this caboose got a very rusty weathering. I've used this time extensively the felt tip pen way. And I've used a ruler. You can see more at my how to - weathering site.

Would you mind linking to a place where one could purchase these weathering pens you use? I'm still not exactly sure what kind of pen it is you're using for this technique... but I like the results so would love to try my hand at it.

    Thanks!

Well, my friend Peter brought them. I've looked for these pens at Google:
    LYRA AQUA BRUSH
    Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens
You need only a few colors. From the Faber I've used only black and one like terracotta. The other pens are like black, grey, red, brown, yellow.

I've reworked the caboose over the last days. It got some light airbrushing with buff. And I painted the steps and railings with the felt tip pens.

    Wolfgang,
great job on the cars and the weathering. Just one suggestion you might of overlooked. On your next cars trim off the small rectangular bit of plastic that holds up the roof walk, on most prototypes the roof end is smooth. Check your cars and you willsee what I mean. Just something to think about, other than that they look great!!!

One of my co-workers was telling me about this as well, that all the roofwalks were removed at a certain point. Many of mine still have them. It's possible to just remove them and fill the holes (athearns) or are there other details missing under the roofwalks?
I'm modeling a fairly late era around the 90's and they look out of place(now that I know).

My layout is in the 70s. So this was a point for me, too.
I've read that a few cars were only with removed walkway. But with most cars they shortened the ladders, too.

That looks perfect Wolfgang, Hope you didn't think I was to picky about it, it was just the first thing I saw when you said you took the roof walks off. Again great job!!
