    Hello all.

I've just been messing about with some video clips and noticed 2 similar shots showing identical locos with identical decoders but one had a flat 8-ohm 1.25" speaker and the other had an 8-ohm 1.25" high bass speaker.

I hadn't realised how different they sounded until I edited both clips together.

I know which one I prefer. What do you think?

I prefer the 2nd one. It sounded better to my ear.

However, that was listening through 2 Dell computer speakers that aren't much themselves in the "ooomph" department. Also not sure how the two samples running at different speeds may have effected it. I was probably paying more attention to that than necessary.

But they each sounded good. The 2nd was better and had more depth to my ear.

I have to go with Kitbash on this - clearly your loco speakers are better than my screen speakers, as I can't tell a difference :)

Hard to tell on my computer's speaker, but High Bass seems a bit more realistic.

The High Bass speaker apparently has a much better low frequency response which produces a more realistic sound.

Most people didn't realize that the exhaust of a modern steam locomotive had a large amount of sound energy at low frequencies. The high frequencies were so intense that they tended to cover the low frequencies. But those low frequencies are what produced the booming stack talk that made locos sound so powerful accelerating a heavy load at low speed.

Totally love the High Bass speakers... I've been systematically replacing all the speakers in my steamers that I can fit one or more of these... truly adds a new dimension to the sound realism.

Jon, the seconed one the high bass speaker sounds a lot better over all as well as in the low end. I have JBL's Creature II's on my computer and they tell no lies.

Definitely the high bass. The other sounds tinny.

I much prefer the High Bass speaker too, and am also in the process of changing over the tender speakers. I have yet to try one in a a diesel.
