Hello Everyone-- I am seeking a set of N-scale Rock Island "Rocket" corrugated, chrome (streamlined) passenger cars. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Steve Williams
Did kato make Rock Island stainless cars? If not, the Concor ones are a good stand in. Kato did make the RDC-3 as a RI model. Or do you know what product you want and just want to know if anyone here is willing to sell it?
The three fluted side cars made by Rivarossi and imported by Atlas and Concor are Rock Island Prototypes (#820 Bag-dorm, #312-315 52 seat Coach and "Golden Vista" and "Golden Divan" 2Br1DR-Barber shop-Buffet Lounge Obs). The Kato 6-6-4 smooth sided sleeper is also correct for RI (Golden Locket, Plaza, Banner, Chariot, Dome, Mesa and Terrace)
This page will give you some idea of what you can do in N-scale... unfortunately there really isn't much available to represent stainless steel cars... http://trainweb.org/passengercars/UsersGuide/CRIP.htm
The three fluted side cars described by Larry E Shankles were apparently sold by Con-Cor lettered for Rock Island. They along with other roadnames are still listed on Con-Cor's website, all "sold out." Both singles and the 5 car set by Con-Cor that included a dome car are sometimes seen on eBay for some of the roadnames, although with less and less frequency. Any could be repainted and lettered if decals are available. Ben
I've got five of the old Con-Cor cars, a baggage/dormitory, 3 dome cars, all #703, and a 'Great Lakes' observation. These have been packed away for years and are in good condition except that one of the dome cars has a broken coupler pocket. Here's some pictures: Are these what you are looking for? I also have a powered Life Like E7A and dummy E7B if you're interested.
RI had one post-war 4-4-2 sleeper built by PS, the LA QUINTA. The ACF 4-4-2 sleeper in the Kato Super Chief sets is very close, and Kato has just announced individual unlettered 4-4-2's.
