    Yes and Yes!!!!!!!

I'm a few "years" behind in updates to the DHVM but will be working on it shortly. I had planned to get my RRAdventures site up-to-date first but I'm still working on 2006 there too. So, I'm getting ready to work both in parallel starting with new images such as your first and then work backwards until I find where and the heck I last left off with everything folks have sent me. I've got literately 2+ years of D&H contributions to get organized and posted plus tons of my own collection still to get online. I would guess that the DHVM site will grow by several thousand more images once I get caught up.

    Darren,

Got the CD today, fantastic!, just what I needed!. I'm going to get a friend to photoshop them together in a continous strip about 3 feet long. I have the Granville Station postcards scanned and will burn them to a disc and send them to you, my wife threw out the mailer with your address and my CRS kicked in again, either PM or email me your address again

    Thanks so much,
    Phil

    Darren,

The Granville Station cd (6 images of 6 different postcards, era: 1900 to approx 1930?) went out Friday. These images have been cleaned up (postmarks removed, small tears & missing corners digitally repaired) sharpened & should give a good idea of how the station appeared in the early part of the 1900's. Hopefully they will add some flavor and historical perspective to the DHVM section on Granville. I plan to walk & photograph most of the Washington branch this summer to document/verify what "structure" remains such as bridges/overpasses, sidings, markers, etc using the schematics you sent as a guide.

    Packaged Arrived

Can you tell me what the Postage/Postmark were on these as I try to use that information to date the cards when I get them posted on the DHVM. If they have none let me know if the back of the postcard is "divided" or not as that too can date the postcard slightly too...

Just a bit of reflection this morning, I was incorrect about Haskins.....Haskin's was a 5 & dime store (variety) Lasher's was the pharmacy Memories of 40+ years ago are getting somewhat hazy.

Ok, with Darren's help I now have a printed track/structure plan of the Washington Branch. Using a 1962 timetable (#48) was able to determine that structures labled like: "W-142.35" are bridges and the streets/roads where the tracks cross are labled.
This summer, starting at Castleton, I plan to walk/drive the entire branch and map/photograph what is left of structure/bridges, etc and measure the passing sidings. Will also stop in each town and talk with folks about what industries the D&H served and where the sidings are/were located......some of the buildings may still be in place (I know what was in Granville!) The purpose of all this is to have an accurate track plan to enable a point-to-point layout that represents the day-to-day operations on this branch, with interchanges at Castleton/Rutland and the B&M at Eagle Bridge......I hope to write an article for the BLHS on this project, but it will be late summer till I get everything together, (hopefully). The trackage of the Battenkill should be easy to find as it is still in use, perhaps they can give me some insight as to changes they have made as well. I'll keep you all posted, thanks for all your support.

Spoke with friends in Granville (NY) today.....the plate girder bridge about 300 yds east of the station is still UP! As previously posted, the bridge was supposed to be removed earlier this month per the State of NY as the abutments are crumbling. The crane and other demolition equipment is in place but apparently they cannot eiter place the crane properly of it does not have enough capacity, in any case, removal has been (at least temporarily) postponed. I have been promised pictures of the demolition (depressing, eh?) and I'm sure that the Granville Sentinel will have pics as well. Sad that the supports could not be repaired to allow this bridge to remain in place.

Note to Darren: I now have aquired a postcard, dated 1910 that shows the original truss bridge, as soon as I can get it scanned and cleaned up, I'll send it to you.

On a slightly different slant, are there any records of what the "jobs" were on the Washington Branch? I know the "name" train was SC-17, also known as the "Slatepicker", were there any other scheduled freights? were they numbered or named?. I remembere most of the cars, at least in the 60's, were boxcars, but also remember some large hoppers. When I survey the branch this summer, I will attempt to locate and/or verify what industries were served, but would like to know how the actual jobs or trains were numbered and scheduled. I can't remember any passenger trains from the mid 50's on, perhaps I missed them......I know this is a ramble, but, if anyone has any memory of these issues, I'd appreciate hearing them.

    Thanks,
    Phil

    Update!

Just spent a week in Granville, visiting friends and doing some photography. The plate girder bridge across the Medowee River is now in the process of being dismantled, I took, perhaps, the last photos of this bridge mostly intact last Thursday. The plan is to shore it up from the riverbed and cut it into six pieces (after the center or track bearing structure is removed-that's in progress) and lift out the pieces with a large crane. The folks doing the demolition were quite helpful and accomodating as I took pictures. They actually cut out a piece of the girder web for me as a momento. I will post some pictures as soon as I get them resized and editied (if anyone want's to see them?) The bridge was erected in 1948 and is being torn down because the South abutment is crumbling and the State of NY feels that it is unsafe. Sad.

I also started surveying and photographing the branch to document what structure still exists above Salem, Got some nice shots of two bridges in Rupert VT and some existing freight sheds as well as an old creamery and a plant where slate laboratory table tops were made, next trip up in Oct, I'll start at Castleton and work down.

Saw the a Battenkill RS-3 switching the mill near Salem while on my way to the Washington County Fair in Greenwich....spent 3 days there in a BW D&H caboose(ex EL in '76) at the fairgrounds helping explain D&H history as as a guest of the Washington Co Historical Society. I'll post pics if there is any interest.

    Cheers,
    Phil

I went to Castleton State College in 1990. The tracks through campus were gone, but the remaining ones were there out of town. They were ripping them up that fall. I never got to take pics, though. Poultney, etc, all towns I'd love to see pics of the trains actually running in.

I had relatives in West Paulet. Went there several times back in the early sixties to early seventies. Never once saw a train running.

Really enjoyed reading the posts about the Washington Branch. I grew up in Salem, 1965-1982, and I've been modeling the D&H in HO scale for about 20 years. No layout as yet, spent 21 yrs in the military, now live in Oregon as a State Trooper but still have family back in NY. I can remember the Sharks running behind the school along the football/track field. I would love to model the Branch Line too, mean while I just keep collecting D&H info. Alcos for ever!
