I was inspired by an entry in the greenlight intermodal contest, so I got one of the Fine N scale Thrall type 48' well cars, cut it down to a 40' and decaled it with a combination of greenlightintermodal decals and thrall microscale decals:
Gary, no, not very hard, lot of cutting (4 cuts per car) some glueing, a bit of putty and a lot of filing.
Jan - Good to know - I've been thinking about the same project, also inspired by the Greenlight contest entry. I was thinking about trying this with a Walthers unit but my experience with just trying to drill some holes in them to add some details made me think twice. The metal they use is very tough! Are the Fine N kits resin? Do they have any weight? If not, have you had any problems operating them? Thanks, Gary
Gary, the Fine N scale kits are resin and have very little weight. They are heavier than the Con Cor all-purpose well cars and track far -far better, but a weighted container makes it much easier to avoid problems. As for problems, the only real one I encountered is that I had to file the area under the end platforms way back to allow free movement of the trucks and put a spacer ring between the truck and the car. Once done it ran well. I'm considering trying this out with a Walthers unit as well for comparisons sake, I will let you know when I do.
Thanks to everyone, but also be sure to check out Scott's custom job also on the greenlightintermodal railimages account, Scott's is fantastic and was the inspiration for this project, and it shows a couple more things I need to do as well! my best, Jan
