About three years ago at NTS in Seattle I think it was, a fellow gave me a sample of a new extremely fine stainless steel wire......very suitable for fence line, power lines, etc. I have long ago lost it....you can hardly see it, and I am looking for some very fine wire, (less than .015") It doesn't have to be stainless, but it needs to be in a straight piece without any coiling effects. Any coiling will prevent it from hanging like a power line. I gotta run 200,000 volts through the Siskiyou mountains on my module. Anyone know who might be offering such? Thank you, Looking for the 'finer' things of life, Loren
i've got brass wire that is .010" and i think there is one even smaller. it comes in a package and i buy it at caboose in denver. have you looked at the fine nylon-like string they make just for telephone poles and such? doesn't shrink or expand with temperature and is easy to use. ezwire, i think. i'll have look it up. (but by the time i do i'm someone will offer it up). dave f.
Craig at BLMA sells some stainless wire grabs, .006", IIRC. The wire he gets is prolly what you need. You may wanna contact him.
You can buy EDM wire suitable for your needs off ebay. I got rolls of the brass kind, but there are other types that will work and look just like high tension lines.
Loren, I might have the one you are looking for. Fine SS wire, it looks like tempered wire and you cannot kink it, it breaks if you forcefully bend it beyond 90degrees. I have ~10 lifetimes worth in G scale modeling. If you dont get any I'll bring it over to the cow palace. Kim
Check out... http://www.gizmosindustrial.com/servlet/the-170119/Detail 3749 feet of .010" stainless wire for under $70.00. Comes coiled, but if you use pliers to stretch it about .25" per foot, it straightens out nicely. I have used it to make N scale fence.
Thanks guys, I ordered two different products and we'll see how they work out. No, sorry, no electric locos through the Siskiyous, but I do need to get some power down to the energy strapped folks down in California. What I should do is figure out how to actually put about 50,000 volts through those tiny wires and then watch the little gremlins touch my high tension lines...ZZZZZAAAAPPPP! That ought to teach the little fellows to keep their hands off the modules. I can see a law suit in the wings ) Thanks all Loren
Loren, have you looked at this?: http://www.berkshirejunction.com/scenery.htm#ezline it is supposedly .003" also if you are determined to use stainless steel: Ngineering - detail stuff is .004" good enough? Chris
What the @&$%# I posted the first response to this thread yeasterday. What happened to it???? Dang Internet!! OK, here we go again!!!! You are looking for .005" Surgical Stainless Steel Wire that comes in 3' sections. Just like the 3' thin tubes that K&S sells their thin wires. I came across this 15+ years ago while going thru Special Forces Selection. We had to clean up an old supply room and I found a tube of it. The label on the Tube called it Surgical Stainless Steel Wire. I miked it at .005" last night. It is straight and very flexible. Unfortunately the wire I have fell out of the tube many years ago and ended up in a 4" ball that resembles a fur ball a cat coughs up. I dare not try to unwind the wire. I just use what I need from time to time. For all I know K&S sells this stuff too. Maybe look at an online medical store. Smallparts.com has it in 30" straight pieces. I do believe this is the stuff you are looking for!!! Hobo Tim p.s. If you go to my photo file and look at the photos of the Sanding Tower, you will see the wire for I used it to simulate holding up the sand piping.
Chris, Yes, I ordered some of Berkshire's product. Should come in about two days Then I can light up my life.....Ha! Loren
