    Hello all,

    Its been a while since I posted anything on this forum. I have however been busy building my 12'X14' steel mill layout. In the past months,Ive built all the walthers steel mill kits and scratch built structures too.

    I still have a long way to go. Laying track is next on the build list.Reason being the shapes of the steel mill structures has to fit in place before track is ever layed.

    The first picture is of DRSC's BOF or basic oxygen furnace.The next pictures are pretty much everthing else.

    A steel mill is big in N scale, but it is REALLY big in H0 scale. I would like to see more pictures of this ambitious project. Excellent job.

    Thank you all for the warm review. It seems that I'm having trouble login in. As a matter of fact I tried to post more pictures yesterday.Didn't work to well.So lets try again.

    The first pic is of DRSC's newest second hand slugs for use in and around the mill,including the slag works.

    This is a HO walthers western flood-loader,the only difference is the old boy really does load hoppers ! I added a chute to load my fleet of roundhouse five bay hoppers.

    [IMG]

    A walthers ore bridge crane for the blast furnace.

    [IMG]

    Another walthers flood-loader that also loads hoppers.

    More to follow....

    Walthers electric melt shop with added rolling mill just for size {not completed yet}

    BOF flux house for additives {scratch built }

    Heres a machine used around the world for hauling scrap buckets. Kress corp makes these for the steel industry.Mine is made from using the front end of a Norscot 627G scraper front end. The rest of the machine is completely scratch built. I got my hands on US patent schematics of this machine and built it by the drawings.

    More to come...

    This is another scratch build of a E-crane in HO.If you have never seen one this is what they look like.

    [IMG]

    This is another scratch build of a Kress corp scrap box carrier.Based on a 1972 design,again using US patent office schematics to build this machine.Same thing using a HO norscot 627G scraper front end,rest is scratch built.

    A 1952 Varney SW-1200 or SW-7,painted in first gen DRSC color.

    [IMG]

    BOF lite up at night using clear LED lights.

    [IMG]

    And last but not least a toy hydraulic front shovel,kit bashed into something more steel mill like.The haul truck is a boley model.

    Hope you enjoy the pictures as there will be a ton to come.As soon as I'm able to get to the hobby shop for track,the layout will take more shape.

    WOW! no expense spared on that "morgan" crane! I WORK in a steel mill and we don't have anything that nice!
    you still need a slag pot hauler...

    Hello Okiecrip,

    Thanks for the kind words. I plan on scratch building another kress carrier soon. A slag pot carrier,based on a kress model.

    BTW...What part of SC you from ? I'm down on the coast about 70 miles from Charleston,SC.Right smack dab in hurricane alley.

    Once again thanks for the kind words.

    Wheeler,

    Yeah I tried to model my crane after Dean Freytag.Dunno if you have ever heard about him or not. A retired steel worker and master steel mill modeler. I really need to weather the morgan....just like the bright orange paint.

    Funny you should mention the slag pot hauler. This is on the build list too. Another kress design,scratch built using ...you guessed it,a HO norscot 627G scraper front end.

    This kress carrier will be more "imagineered" ,than the real machine. I like the overly large looking machines.

    I like the use of Lego aircraft wheels. Reminds me of the MR article where someone used Lego wheels on an intermodal crane.
