Thanks all. I just did an interview for the local TV station for one of those Folks segments and they asked he what was my favorite part of the layout: The Yadkin River. Somehow, I lucked up and got it right I guess.

I started with a 2 x 4 piece of 1" blue foam board and covered it with thin layer of wallboard joint compound, wet it to help smooth it out. After it dried, I block sanded it to get as smooth as I could and wiped the dust clean. I like the way joint compound takes paint and use it instead of plaster of paris. It stays workable a lot longer too.

I think I used a light wash of Burnt Umber Acrylic, and maybe some green. Sorry, but I never planned to duplicate it and didn't keep any formula. Just brushed it on not trying to make it uniform with some heavier spots here and there.

After that had dried, I brushed on a coat of Gloss Medium full strength. Repeat with a couple of thin coats. Starting about the 3rd coat, I went back and stippled in the ripples with the brush, doing it in parallel lines to make waves. Repeat this on the 4th coat.

After all that was dry, I added the shoreline on top with playbox sand tapering it towards the edge with a 3" brush. Top the sand with alcohol spray to wet and 50/50 white glue.

I must warn you that there are a couple of bubbles under the bridge. I have heard this is a problem with gloss or matte medium and I didn't check to see what causes it or if there is a solution.

My wife was looking over my shoulder as I drooled over your river/bridge scene. "How did he do that?"

Now she has much higher expectations for her river scene (36"F-B x 8"-10" wide).

I hope I can model one half as good as yours cam out.

    Wonderful modeling.

I've been putting in a few Tortoises in spots that weren't accessible with ground throws and twin coils in the front part of the hump yard. That got old after a while, so I took a break and did some scenery for a couple of days.

Thanks guys. I don't have much photo worthy lately. Have been working on adding twin coils to the hump yard and Tortoises to the out of reach switches on the yard inbound/outbound tracks.

I have bought a Team Digital SMD82 which includes a CDU to power the coils and can have routes programmed with CVs so the hump can be switched with a throttle.

I have also started on laying the splines and base for the turntable at the Spencer Shops (NC Trans Museum). The turntable is in place and I need to decide on surrounding tracks.

I did some scenery at the north end of Linwood yard

I love Spencer, NC, and the train shop is just half the fun :)

    Kevin, Looking great as always!

Question: Looking at the last pic above reminds me of where I am on my layout progress. I just got the first risers in place and clamped a spline in temporarily to see how everything looks. While doing this, I started thinking about where I was going to run my bus wires. Which leads back to your photo above. I see you have bored holes in the joists and run the wires through them. I really like this technique (I have done a good bit of home wiring in the past) but was wondering if there are any cons to this approach. If not, I'll probably follow your method and do the same thing.

No cons that I can think of. I would drill the holes and follow the path of the splines. I started a set before I had the spline in and some didn't match up and had to redrill.

I would make 2 or 3 sets while you're doing them. I first did them for the track feeder bus, but didn't think about the Loconet wires, and the AC Accessory bus or the Tortoise bus.

I recently went back and subdivided my 4 power districts into 8. That meant more buswires feeding back and more holes. It's a real pain doing them after you start scenery.

And be careful pulling the buswire. You wouldn't think wood could strip the insulation off a 14 ga wire, but it can.

Some progress on the branch lines this weekend. This was an area previously occupied by the dispatcher's desk, but I moved it out to the newly created crew lounge. Once I did that, you know I just had to do something with that space. So I am creating 2 branch lines. One (upper) the NS M-Line from High Point to Asheboro. It will connect into my existing High Point Yard. This thread shows some of the industries (NS M-Line)

The simple trackplan carried them across the side door, but I didn't want to block it entirely. I kept thinking about a lift-out, but realized a drop bridge would do as well. I did offset them so that the second level could drop and still clear the door. They are held on the drop end with some dowel pins, so they can just be pulled quickly if needed.

More pics of the new M-Line. Exits High Point Yard, around and across the pit around by a to be created Asheboro and ends at Starpet.

The branch is the "mountain" line. The upper lever drops 3% to get down to the first level and creates an optical illusion with the flat branch line.

It's time for my usual overdue update. Not much since I took 3 months off from the layout. I got started back just before Christmas and have been fairly steady since. I began scenicking the other end of the M-Line that you can see in the June 3rd post. This is the area on the other side of the room and is winter. Not the easiest to work with since there's not much color and no tree leaves to hide everything.

The last pic is one of the Imex cast buildings. Since it might be a while until I can get around to all the buildings, these are easy enough to use. Oh, who am I kidding...it'll probably still be there 10 years from now.
