Rio Grande's SD50 5507 was still unpatched in April 2003. A neat looking machine I think.

They certainly served the Grande well--thanks for taking us back in time!

This is the only SD50 I had ever caught, 5502:

Nice looking paint there, nose lights too, very nice.Dont forget the bell on brakemans side tho.
Got all the units from 5501 to 5517,think I have to finish painting 1 or 2 of them, but they are all there, may even dig them out for some pic's too.
Got to get back into the mood & finish some of my re-paints off.......

Indeed it is. If you can make out the number, I can tell you what number she wore for the Grande....

    Jason,
I'd love to see the whole fleet!

BTW, the SD50's are RGD v3; the GP40's are in v2. I have all 3, very worthwhile to own as reference material.

Here's 5508, just needs nose and tail striping:

5516's the other number I'm doing.

Of course the trick with RGD v1 or v2 is that they have been long sold out and you have to get lucky on Ebay or something to get one. I bought my v1 and v2 back in 1985 and they are well worn books! v3 is still available for sale having only come on the market a few years ago.

V1 and 2 were ebay finds, and vol 3 I got at Caboose Hobbies.

Windle, 5507 I have as well, but it is a stock F/P Atlas...
    Same goes for 5510.

5508 just happened to be together ont he decal sheet; no cobbling required. ;)

Flash, that engine used to be D&RGW 5515. Info from Utahrails.net's UP roster pages.

Thanks, Jason--actually the bell is already installed on 5508. It is barely visible. I have bells on all my 5500's. Without looking, are there bells on the fireman's side? They are on the engineer's side, though...

Yep, I had the feeling Ebay was the only way to get them. I think I got my copy of v3 at Caboose hobbies as well. About 8 or 9 years ago an estate went up for sale at my LHS and it included v1 and v2 among other RG books. I bought them both for the original retail price of $24.95 (or there abouts) and turned them around for double that as the going rate was about $48 at the time. I still love my RGD books and was reading them last couple of nights before going to bed.

The only bell is mounted on the engr's side just in front of the radiator grills and above the doors as you can see in the 5508 photo.

Here's my 5507 done about 12 years ago with an RPP SD60 shell.

    No sweat, Jason..
I got more decals down last night. maybe pics tonite.
Good thing I have a lot of decal solvent--SD50's have lots of protrusions to snuggle a decal down over!
