Hello, I want to start with painting my own N scale locomotives. Now i'm looking for a easy to do paintscheme with 1 or 2 colors. Like blue for the shell and grey for the tank and trucks. I'm also looking for an engine wich doesn't have very difficult with angels and strange curves on the shell. I hope you can help me.
Obviously, single color is the easiest. Two are more difficult and will require taping. What paint and which application will you be using? Acrylic or spirit based, hand brush or air brush?
I use an airbrush and want to use acrylic paint because that's less toxic for my health. I want to use decals from Microscale. And the engine has to be an Atlas or Kato because they are the most realible.
Sort of Conrail type? Not bad. I like the Conrail blue color. You can use the single color to paint the upper body and and a different one for the trucks/tank. Then use a decal for a different colored sill stripe. Also barrier stripes on the ends are a good way to add other colors.
You could use the Penn Central paint scheme: just plain black, plus white lettering, sometimes the "worms in love" logo was red and white. An alternative would be Pennsylvania Dark Green Locomotive Enamel, which is what I will use for my first paint tests.
Go freelance. Paint it all grey and call it the "Primer Pacific":teeth: Seriously, if you like modern stuff, there are several lease companies that have grey engines with black trucks/tank.
if you went with the mopac scheme, you'd also stay within the current UP "family". one color plus some good decals. dave f.
CNW and SOO had interesting paint schemes that were pretty straight forward. I would suggest looking through the pictures on railpictures.net - there's a large variety of interesting paint schemes there. Once you find something you like, you ought to be able to find multiple angles of it on rrpicturearchives.net.
By the way- Don't think even for a passing moment that acrylics will not damage your lungs. They will. Outside painting or inside with a paint booth and a mask are seriously recommended.
Norfolk and Souther is sold black with lots of decals. Probably the easiest loco to paint would be the Kato F45PH: All boxy lines. I don't know if NS had any. I'd suggest a fantasy line. "Ivo International" or sumething
If you're looking to model an earlier perod, the Reading and the CNJ both went through periods of minimalism. Reading: http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/rdg665.jpg CNJ: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/cnj/cnj1531kga.jpg
This site has 100s of locos and paint schemes all sorted by type or road name: New Page 1 This page has Norfolk and Southern: Comp4 SD70 sample:
My first custom job was a ICG diesel. It was pretty easy. just spray everything white then mask off the ornage areas and spray everything orange. Not saying you should do the same road, but there is plenty out there with an easy scheme like this.
Go freelance! I desingned a easy to paint scheme that I may still do some day. Black bottom. Silver top painted with Allcad II paints. The black bars and cab roof would be done with decals so that none of the parts had to be masked. Decals were simple (no white) and could be printed at home. The name is subject to change. Made a logo for it too.
Here's a few quick and easy paint jobs. Some are one color, some multiple. The decals are all available from Microscale or Highball graphics. Pick something you like and have at it. Modelers license is yours to use as well (MoPac never had any SD50's that I know of in the Blue Screaming Eagle scheme, but I think it looks cool!) Brian
Brian, You are correct the MP SD50's came in the armour yellow and grey scheme only which was a real shame. I like you model though it looks great. You can't get any easier than MoPac
