Since I'm gonna be back in central Georgia for three months (this time in Cordele), I know for sure I won't get bored finding Class 1 action, esp. with both NS and CSX running thru town. Anybody have a decent guess on the amount of trains CSX runs thru Cordele daily on their line? I've shot B36-7s and GP40-2s with road slugs at their depot, and several trains rolling thru town (see my "Real (Cor)Dele!" album in RI), but obviously I'd like to shoot more. I know of Folkston and Jesup, but for the purposes of this topic I'd like to focus on Cordele. The other two locations will be visited, I assure you....... TIA for the help.
Bob, I have only been to Cordele once. Know the NS and CSX pass through and is the home of the HOG. I've heard it's a relatively good spot. Maybe we will have a second chance to hook up and do some railfanning if I can get there in one piece.
I've got shots of all three RRs in action in Cordele, including one of the HOG's three locomotives (IIRC, their main yard is in Americus, where I shot their ex-CN diesel). I did all my photog work in the morning hours at the southeast side of the CSX/NS diamond, since the SW side looked to be off-limits. For EB CSX trains, you get ample warning, as they have to whistle for several crossings. I would indeed like to make another attempt to do some railfanning- just look out for inattentive kids in pickups, and it's all good
I'll be watching this thread with interest. Though I've lived in Wilson, NC since 1999, Albany, GA is "home". (That's about 35 miles SSW of Cordele) I go through Cordele on every trip home, but have rarely managed to catch any movements. Granted, I'm on the road, and don't spend much time, but I do listen in on the scanner.
I think that Cordele sees about half or little less that what passes thru Folkston per day. There are plenty of spots around that area for great pics. Hope that you enjoy your trip back to GA again.
I can tell you from observation that CSX is using a B30-7 and B40-8 for a local switcher in & around Cordele, and it seems about 20-25 trains pass tur town a day, compared to the 15 or so NS has. According to the GODOT maps, CSX has twice the amount of freight rolling thru town as does NS, so that amounts for the action. HOG has about one train daily, not counting the SAM Shortline excursion runs to Plains and back (once each Saturday, and several other days a month). Folkston is on my agenda for May or June on a Saturday. I;ve also been gathering info on shortlines in the Peach State, and I need to get those captured on pixels as well.
Every time I see this reporting mark, I chuckle. It just can't be the best that AAR might have assigned... Boxcab E50
The railroad also uses a razorback hog as its logo. Wonder if the Brass Hat wuzan Arkansas alumnus.......
Since I understand that HOG has mostly ex-SAL trackage, perhaps they "borrowed" the old Seaboard's piggy-back image; "Razorback ... raring to go."r
