The new (today) official press release from KCS on the locomotives and paint scheme. http://notes.kcsi.com/WebApps/kcspr...104843904861e7a8862572a400752c2a?OpenDocument Of particular interest is paragraph 5, which reads: "KCS has also committed to purchase 1,050 covered hopper rail cars and 150 covered coil rail cars, which will receive a paint scheme complementary to the heritage theme. The first of 150 covered hoppers will be released on March 22 from American Railcar Industries in Paragould, Ark. The covered hoppers will be subleased to KCSM." Regards Ed
My only hope is that the red used will stand up well to the sunlight of the southern climes- I still have memories of red vehicles badly faded.
I remember that at one time the MKT painted their locos red. It quickly faded to a very embarrassing shade of hot pink!
Freight cars usually don't receive such multicolored schemes. What colors did KCS use on freight cars in the era of the original Southern Belle scheme?
I don't think the new hopper car scheme is meant to be retro of their old freight car livery, just to mesh with the new image they're presenting with the locomotives. By the way, first photos of the hoppers are out on Trainorders.com. It's a much more reserved scheme, mostly Brunswick green, with red and yellow striping and the big KCS stopsign logo. Regards Ed
Okay, a good photo is available here: http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=16522 Same colors used as on the locomotive, but this is a much more subdued scheme, probably appropriate for a freight car. I like it. By the way, that's "Brunswick Black", I mean "Brunswick Green", even though it looks black on my monitor. Actually, the bottle of Polly Scale Brunswick Green that I bought last year looks black to me too. Maybe I have trouble with colors........ Regards Ed
KCS Freight car color scheme That's the KCS Southern Belle passenger car color scheme applied to a covered hopper! mg: BTW, PRR's Dark Green Locomotive Enamel (DGLE) was also called Brunswick Green. We used to joke on the Pennsy that someone dumped a pint of forest green in ten gallons of black paint to make the color. :cat:
When I hear the term "Brunswick Green" I normally think of the PRR. Not being a long term KCS fan, I had no idea that they had used that color too. Yeah, that seems about right. The old classic NdeM color scheme uses red/orange with a green very similar to that. It always looks black in photos. Regards Ed
Ed, I receive numerous HTML code errors when I try to view your photo, also the image is red-x'ed. Are there some Spam, Pop-Up, etc. prevention settings that I need to relax in order to receive your photo?
Well, it's not my photo, although I would have loved to have taken it. I got the link from another website yesterday. It worked at that time but now I get the same errors as you mention. Sorry, can't help, I hope it's just a temporary thing. Computer problems that can't be solved by rebooting are beyond me. Regards Ed
