I have often wondered this to the point it drove me insane....well almost

the train yard near me has alot of old railroad crossing signals that have been taken out of service and have wondered what exactly do MOW gangs do with old dwarf signals and railroad crossing signals

do they sell them or scrap them or just leave them laying around until they need them again

would like to ask them sometime but dont want to get arrested for asking it the wrong way. Would also like to get a few dwarf signals for my train room (even though my train room is kind of a fire patch/collectible fire truck/train room)

Conrailfan, I would suggest that you contact the railroad (Is it CN now?) or D&H, by mail, and inquire as to the fate of the signals, and express your interest in obtaining one or more (if that is your intention). Here in Oregon, the Central Oregon and Pacific (CORP) has been removing semaphores from their rails. We had a mentor who had a website and would connect people with the railroad if they desired to obtain the old signal devices.
