    Greetings All,

My company finally announced yesterday that our workgroup will be relocating to Pittsburgh in late 2008/early 2009.

Any model railroaders lurking here from the Pittsburgh area?

I did a little web research and it seems there are a lot of hobby shops and a pretty active model RR community around that area.

You'll like it here around the 'Burgh. I can't imagine living anywhere else.

There are a few good hobby shops around Pittsburgh, but the best by far is Esther's Hobby, which deals pretty much exclusively in N-scale.

    Thanks Ray..

I'm actually looking forward to the move. This will be the first time in over 20 years that I'll have the opportunity to have a house with a basement to where I can build a layout again. That alone will be worth the hassle of moving! :D

Can't wait to make some trips out there to start "basement shopping"..hehe :D

+1 for Esther's. They've survived a few floods and are still ticking!

I wish I had heard of this last week. We were in Pitt over President's day weekend as my son's hockey team was in a tournament.

And please, just because I live in the suburbs of Cleveland, doesn't mean we have to be mortal enimies. :teeth:

Esther's has a website. Just enter Esthers hobbies in a search engine. And Cleveland isn't bad. Besides the unfortunate nickname as the Mistake on the Lake and being known for the only place where a river actually caught on fire, there are some really good MRR events up around Cleveland as well as Akron and Youngstown. The upcoming show at the Lakeland College in Kirtland, OH is a perenial favorite of mine.

Cool..I've bookmarked Esther's website. I'll have to stop in there when I do my first house-hunting trip!

I plan on attending as part of the Lake Erie N Scale Society (N-Trak) group. I'm new to the group and have no module yet (working on a small layout still). As a matter of fact, I'm off to a meeting!

Mike - now you can go see Sand Patch Grade, Mance, and all the other great sights along the old B&O mainline from Cumberland Maryland up to Pittsburgh - The Pittsburgh Division East End. I've been out that way a few times - still plan to get out there in the fall some year.
So here's some video or CDs you should see to help familiarize you with the area:
CSX Volume 6 Pittsburgh to Willard, Ohio (Green Frog Productions)
CSX Volume 8 Baltimore Service Lane Cumberland Business Unit (Green Frog)
    Sand Patch Grade (Pentrex)
Vignettes of the Baltimore and Ohio Volume 4 (Clear Block Productions)
I think that 125 miles or so from Pittsburgh to Cumberland is some of the nicest railfanning around. The Narrows outside of Cumberland is awesome.

Well, next time you're around, we'll get you directions to a few of the better places...Esther's, Cranberry Hobby Depot, etc. Pittsburgh also has an active N-trak group and a LiteTrak group as well. If I weren't so far out of the city, I'd probably join both.

No problems here. As far as I'm concerned, the only significant sporting event in the area is the U.S. Open at Oakmont. :shade:
