Yes, but the Kato caboose trucks and the frame are worth the price of the car if you can get it at a reasonable price. Stay cool and run steam.....
For some reason Kato chose an obscure prototype to model. I think I remember seeing a photo of a real one painted for some short line. I don't understand why they didn't do something more generic looking that could have been close to a lot of different railroads.
Reasonable? Definately NO. Kato's MSRP on the caboose was 24.98; the light kit sells for 5.98. That's a total of $30.96. $40.00 sounds like somebody trying to place a rip-off in the holiday rush; unless the caboose has some "added" value like details or a custom paint job...
That depends on how bad you want it:teeth: New in the box the unlighted Kato cabeese usually go on Ebay for ~ $15.00, lighted ones ~ $25.00. The one catch is that I believe that the Rio Grande one that is listed only came as part of a train set and was not sold seperate. That would make it harder to find and may bring a higher price if someone just has to have it.
This caboose is featured on the Trainboard Denver & Rio Grande Western "Top Ten Least Prototypical D&RGW Models" thread! mg:
Kato's choice baffles me too. Looks like a modern bobber caboose. I have a BN and it looks ridiculous behind 50 and 60 ft cars. Yes, $40 is wayyyyyy too much for a lighted version.
Here is the protoype picture of Cambria & Indiana #56 from Kato's website. Below is the link to Kato's decription of the model. http://katousa.com/n-scale/cupola-caboose.html Andrew
