I took this whilst waiting for my ride home from visiting the folks a few weeks back. The unfortunate thing with the Ipswich yard is that sun is on the wrong side.
Not sure what these'll hold.. Any ideas?

First guess would be Oil and/or Natural Gas such as those used by OMV in Central Europe.

I first thought bitumen but there's not enough spill material on the sides. Possibly printers ink for newspapers?

They are used by Ciba Geigy for carrying "adhesive raw materials" which basically means chemicals used to make glue. IIRC the chemicals are imported and carried by rail from Kings Lynn to their adhesives plant at Duxford.

    Cheers

Nice one, Carolyne :) I have never seen that type of tank wagon before. Wonder what the TOPS code is?

Were they on the loco stabling side of the station (west side)? They look rather like the Esso TTA fleet used to bring diesel in to the fuelling point there?

They look similar Martin. The ones I shot were in the yard opposite the station next to the Freightline depot. I forget which 66 was attached.

If they were in that yard then that's likely them - they bring diesel for the loco's from Fawley (near Southampton) - by quite a convoluted route!

EWS gets them to Ipswich yard (the one North of the station where the intermodal trains reverse/shunt) and Freightliner usually bring them across to their fuelling point as needed.
