Here's a scratchbuilt well car that goes with my GP38 hi hood. I plan on scratching 3/4 of my rolling stock and have a goal of at least 75 cars. Pics I hope are included in this: This was built with styrene for the frame, fridge magnets for weight, pieces cut from spaceships from a birthday grab bag, and the handrailings from a caboose with the ladder cut off. I'm hoping to build more of these. Just have to add the decals and weather it to complete my first rolling stock scratchbuild.
Ed, Nicely done! It looks all but like the Athearn well cars... what did you use for a guide to build it????
I kinda followed the Nov 2001 issue of model railroader. I didn't follow any of the steps that they did, I just looked at the photo, looked at the dimensions on the plans, and cut the way I saw fit.
Thats the way I do my scratch building Ed. Then if you are out slightly it doesn't matter because it's your railroad isn't it?
Exactly Robin, make a prototype of your own from a prototype of someone elses...lol. Like for instance I have seen your photos of your subway cars, and you've sent me pics of your passenger cars, now I'm creating my own prototype from those ideas. I'll let you know how my whole train of scratchbuilt passenger cars go
Good job Ed! Very inventive The good thing about freelanced cars is they cannot ever be wrong Now all you need are lots more to make a complete stack train
Alan I will be scratchbuilding alot more of these when I can get more rapido trucks to use. I'm planning to build a few more single cars, then a couple of sets of 3. I will keep posting pics of completed units.
I've devoted almost 10 years into scratch building one train! Next year will 10 years on my scratch built, freelanced MOW train that carries "Baltimore And Ohio" on its sides in Dulux gold (deep, dark yellow) lettering on all dark blue cars! Even some cars have the dulux gold (deep, dark yellow) pin striping! Some cars are made from prototype B&O Work cars, and others are work cars that I seen from other railroads that the B&O didn't have... But I liked them so...I made them and put on the blue paint and the yellow lettering... The train as I type this out is 21 cars long... And their are 9 Cars waiting to be custom detailed, painted, retooled, even completely built to add to the 21 thats already completed! Being of long length and cars in plenty... It takes 2 Rivarossi 2-8-8-0's to pull it... Its not your everyday type complete train from factory... I've got just about every type material involved in it at one point, metals, plastics, wood, you name it, the cars could end up made from it! This is the train that made me famous in my area... Their is not one brand new car in the entire train! Its all rebuilt from junk cars and parts with other cars kit bashed into a then "new" car. The newest part of the entire train is the motive power, and then only one was bought new! The other one I bought used in nasty shape and reconditioned it and remotored it to run with the brand new one! I want to get pictures of it online and all to show... But my camera isn't the best and with this preticular train you can say I'm picky on it... I want to be able to show down to the smallest detail... All of that one aside, I'm working on another MOW train in Western Maryland as well but have not started him yet, and in the works I have a B&O passenger train started but the passenger is of prototype.
