What size wheels are on the 1100 series dash 9's. 1104 to be exact. 40 or 42 in wheels. I know the old Santa fe dash 9's have the 40's on them. Wondering they may have changed to 42 with the newer orders. If they did switch to the bigger wheels at what number did they start them. Did it start with units in the H1 scheme as this is what that unit is.

    Thanks

Jack, looking at my notes here and everything I see says that BNSF stayed with the standard set by Santa Fe with a wheel size of 40 inches. The 960-1123 series of locomotives came from GE in 1997 and wore the H1 scheme, but I see no mention of a change of wheel size of 42 from 40. I'll do some more digging in some more books I have and see if I can turn up some additional infor for you.

I show it with 42 inch wheels.

It may be a standardization issue. This way a smaller parts inventory has to be kept on hand to service the large locomotive fleet. And if service is necessary, the repairs can be done at a facility that is nearby instead of halfway across the country.

Ok thanks. Now Here is another question. Did BNSF rewheel the older Santa fe dash 9's as they went through for maintence to the 42 in wheels.

Everything I have browsed shows that 42 inch wheels are equipped on virtually all Dash 9s. However, the 4300 shows it has 40 inch wheels.
That or they are worn down past the witness groove:eek:mg: !

Ok. I have an older magazine article when the First dash 9's coming out they were giving each railroads order as how they differ from one another. It was in the Model Railroading magazine. I think it was the March and April issue in 96 that gave the options for the Santa Fe loco's as the BNSF dash 9's were yet to be delivered. they gave the older Santa Fe's as 40 in wheels.

    Thanks for the info.
