I wanted a copy of the August, 2002 magaizine which featured steam engine weathering. After having to call customer service to help me through ordering on line (my stupidity, not theirs, they were extremely helpful and competent) the following was the bottom line. $5.50 for the magazine $4.50 for shipping and handling. Just a small complaint that the s&h is realy high. It is not a big deal in greater scheme of things, but just a minor irritation.

Mark, I believe the S&H charge may remain constant regardless of the number of issues purchased up to a dozen or so. This is what happened when I ordered 10 back-issues close to 20 years ago. I tried to verify this on the MR site, but couldn't find it conveniently.
Should have looked for that issue on Ebay. Probably could have found someone to send it to you for only $3.50 S&H. Of course, it would have been used................ Ed
Correction- $4.95 shipping. It was only a minor gripe since $10 or $11 is not going to make a big difference to me. I would rather pay it than guess what to weather what color.
Unfortunately most shipper (including e-baer) do not realize that you can actualy ship magazine to a cheaper rate if marked Media Mail.
I had a person complain that I wouldan't ship the book he won on ebay 'Media Mail'. He still wasn't happy when I told him that it only applies to within the US, not global or from Australia.
I recently looked at ordering a special edition from MR. I discovered the cost of shipping was more than the price of the publication! Greed cost them more than that sale. On another issue, I subscribed to "Trains" for several years. But now that there are so few railroads I know putting an issue together must be hard to fill. Case in point, yesterday at my LHS I looked at the current issue and found it contained 82 pages total. Conpared to my 10-15 year old issues this stinks, especially since the current price has increased while the content has gone down. Maybe the profit center has switched to S&H? Doc
I avoid the whole debate and buy used back issues from either the local club ($0.25 each) or the train shop ($0.50 each) - and no shipping! Andrew

I don't think magazines are eligible for media mail because they contain advertisements. Something to be checked on before trotting off to the post office to mail a magazine.
I send magazines by media mail quite often. Thats what media rate is for, low cost transport of media, ie, information within the US. Books, magazines, sheet music, CDs, VHSs, DVDs, LPs, etc etc. All of those things usually have advertising in them.
Magazine received three days ago and I am glad it was ordered. It is quite detailed in how and what to weather. Money well spent.
