How do you like your's cooked? Here's a BNSF C44-9W that I caught in Seattle on 9/19 that had some sort of malfunction. Anyone know where or when this happened? < http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=38993 > Stan
Don't know the details, but that's a neat challenge for modeling! If my own project list wasn't already so full, I'd give it a try.
That one looks well-done! Likely a turbo on its last legs spraying oil caught fire, and burned the paint off the flanks...
I have heard fron the guys in the shops a lot of them are doing that. The Turbo's are giving way and making them nice and Toasty like that.
I am sure this happens to other railroads that run the Dash 9, but I have yet to see any. I know this happens to BNSF locos alot as there are alot of pictures out there with this sort of damage. The other day I was out watching a train and of the 4 Dash 9s pulling the train two of them had the scorch marks.
Someone in the Interbay roundhouse told me yesterday "those dash 2's are the only thing keeping this railroad running" as we stood next to a dash-9. Kevin
I've sen Dash 9's cooked like this in CSX, NS and Conrail paint schemes. I seen a couple that were even a little more well done. Hmmmmm.........now where did I put those mashmellows?
Well, they apparently have somewhere in the neighborhood of 9000 units not fully accounting for the many SD40-2s that have been returned and the occasional wreck. Actually, they appear to have around about 2800 GEs including what's on order per that website, so about 1/3 of the roster. Hmmm, given their ubiquitousness, I would have thought it was more.
