I know this has probably been talked about, but what is the best way to take a number of of these cars. I want to have a fleet of CSX cars but don't really like any manufacturers cars other than Kato and Athearn. I will just be removing one number each per car and don't want to damage the paint below. Any help is appreciated.

Removing numbers on KATO rolling stock.

I just removed white numbers on a KATO SD45 in SP livery without removing the SP grey paint under the numbers 2 days ago.

I used a simple method already described on this forum : slowly rubbing the letters with a brush dipped into 91% propylic alcohol.

I could remove the letters after 5/6 attempts with fresh new drops of alcohol, while at the same time keeping wiping the moving white paint with a piece of cotton fabric, otherwise the paint just get dried a bit further.

It was rather easy. The result for a first try is well but the only thing I noticed is that the grey paint under the letters went from flat to more glossy... As I will weather the engine, it should not be a big issue.

I then also used this method to fade the white letters of the Roman lettered SOUTHERN PACIFIC logo, as a first step of my heavy weathering.

I hope this will help you for your KATO cars. I have never tried on ATLAS rolling stock yet. I am planning to remove numbers on an ATLAS SD50 RIO Grande. If someone can tell me the best method...

I dip the eraser on a #2 pencil in rubbing alcohol and rub the numbers off. It takes it off quicky, but don't push too hard or the paint underneath will start to come off.

I've used both methods above and also used a q-tip dipped in 91% alcohol to remove numbers and letters. Just don't rub too hard and be patient. Will work great sir.
