Once again I contacted Atlas for some undecorated shells GP-40's this time (SD50's last time) and again they have no parts. Anyways, I'm looking for 2 GP-40 complete shells (not 40-2's) with dynamic brakes for a project. I would prefer black handrails if possible. Anyone out there want to part with 2 of them. If so please email me at jgowers@visi.net and let's work something out. Thanks.

I also have tried to contact Atlas about handrails for two of my locos(GP40 and a GP9). The response was the same as yours. Kinda makes you wonder how one of the world's largest train manufacturers can treat people like this. They build the locos but they don't have the parts.

ok, this is not to bash Atlas this is just FYI...

...I've placed an order at Atlas some days ago and a week later the box was in my mailbox (USA to NZ in less than a week - great...), the order was for C-630 shells, I've got the shells (ok, one was missing but was on the invoice), the cabs, the handrails, the window glazing, actually everything but the SILL UNIT !

what exactly I am supposed to do now with this parts w/o the sill unit ?

Which release of GP40, JDG? And which release of GP9 and GP40, Ed? The earlier releases would be getting thin, understandably, and as an example the DB GP9's went many moons ago.
Before going off too much, Atlas have led the field when it comes to spares for their locomotives, whether body shells and parts, or mechanism parts, all at reasonable prices and generally readily available. Try getting the same level of service, at the price, from any of the others. In this way we have been spoilt.
I assume recent releases have had a delay in getting the spares sent (probably made) as Atlas has been busy releasing new and re-run units. Producing the spare parts takes time from the RTR production and (I believe) the factory is the same producing for LL, Intermountain and Bachmann, so machine time sharing would be in place.

Steve, that sounds like a QA issue. I've never ordered a complete body shell (and I have ordered plenty!) and not have all the parts in a single bag. I'm certain Atlas will rectify quickly.

As for which GP-40 or SD50 I asked the customer service lady for any that they had. They had no release of either loco shell in stock and were unable to tell me when they may become available. I aslo tried to piece each one and struck out there also (kinda like the missing side sill ,etc.). Yes Atlas is far superior than say KATO in getting parts but I seem to be striking out (as are others ) here lately.

    jdg,
call caboose hobbies in denver (they're on the net so you can get a phone number), they have most of the atlas shells in stock (sills, glass, cab, hoods, truck, etc.) ask for "roger" in parts. if he's got 'em they'll fix you up fair and square.

I have never had a problem with atlas parts. Always, got what I asked for. Most of the time, I order by email since I have downloaded all of their part sheet pdfs.

You may consider that when they(atlas) do a production run, they have made so-many complete units and so-many extra parts. If your looking for GP-40 parts from the 1997 run, that supply may finally be exhausted:eek:mg:

There was a similar problem when came to B30-7 engines. Atlas was out of parts, undetermined when they'd have them in. Apparently, a LOT of modelers were building BN B30-7A's...
They sell out of parts, but seems to take longer than it shouold to resupply stocks. Horns and such are usually stocked.

I don't think the restock items on regular base. I heard once that the restock parts at the same time they do a new run. It is more a like by-product.

If you go to the Atlas online catalog they list the GP40 shells at $9.50. They also say "This item replaces part # 485211," so if you tried to order part #485211, it would not be listed as in stock.

Of course, it may be out of stock anyway, in which case they should update their online catalog.

I ordered a GP40 (485401) dynamic brake shell on 5-28-06 and it was here 6-1-06, it already cut up and glued back together for my project.

A week earlier I ordered the handrails and sills and got those as well.

Contacted Caboose Hobbies and spoke with Roger. He said he did not have any and has been trying to get some from Atlas. However, he also has been unsuccessful. I went online to their parts section and put in an order. We will see what happens. If they show then the phone is not the way to order parts.

correction: I've placed the order on 05/25/2006 and I've received the parts on 05/30/2006, I've sent a complain about the missing sills and shell and I've received the shell and the sills (the ones w/o footboards are available) on 06/03/2006 (free !) and that is a great service from Atlas !! :shade:

You know, that's extremely fast service by the post. 5 days Eastern Seaboard to NZ for the initial and 4 days to respond, send and receive the missing parts.
That's excellent service by all concerned!
