As for my old love, I used to go to the airport to watch planes take off and land, and snap pictures left and right, and go home with about two whole roles of planes. I have a dilema about taking train pictures. Where do you go to take pictures of trains? I was thinking about yards, but most of them are all blocked off anyway.

    Erm... how about trackside?

Seriously though, stay away from yards. Unless you are invited onto the property by an employee, or unless you *know* that visiting is allowed, the railroad will not want you there, and may even call security or police to evict you.

I'd suggest finding public places e.g. parking lots, parks, streets, etc... that are near busy railroad lines, and starting there.

CM Coveray, Welcome to the Train Board, we're glad to have you aboard.

As to train watching and photo ops, bridges are generally the best places, especially up in your neck of the woods. Are there roads and bridges that overlook Sunnyside Yard in Queens? Consider the Mott Haven Yard or Spuyten Dival areas in the Bronx for Metro North action. I assume areas around Newark would have lots of Northeast Corridor, PATH, Metro North, and freight action.

A good source of advice might be Rush2NY who lives in Queens. Russ has posted lots of photos from all over the NYC Metro area.
