How hard would an Atlas GP-7 (model number 48237) DCC conversion be. Please keep in mind, this would be one of my first DCC projects.
I looked at the following site:
    http://www.raybob.boche.net/
but that was for a GP7TT, I dont know if they use the same mech or not.
    Thanks,

    Brad

It isn't dificult to place a decoder in an Atlas GP-7. Just modify the frame by cutting a space for the decoder on top and provide channels for the wiring to the motor brushes, frame and lighting.

Use the link below to guide you:

I discussed this topic just a month or so ago when I was about to begin conversion of mine. There's a pic in there someone took, my installation is similar but I kept both light boards by filing the LED down some on the one I put the decoder under. That freed up a bit more room as well as notching the frame. Hope this helps.

    Brad:

    It's an easy decoder installation.

    Sorry for the bump

I realize this thread is quite old, but after searching it seems to be the most relevant one.

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit a sound decoder in one of these older Atlas Geeps?

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

Which Geep are you looking to convert? You might take a look at the TCS CN or CN-GP decoder. It's made on a split board and, in many (but not all) cases is supposed to fit Atlas Geeps, I believe without having to mill the frame.

    CN Series

They have a decoder selector with photos to compare your loco frame with right here:

MRC has a sound decoder for the newer Atlas diesels. You could probably modify the frame to get this decoder to fit.

TCS has decoders to fit the older Atlas GP-7's. I converted several of my older GP-7/9's using the TCS decoders.

    have fun..

Thanks for the replies, I'll check the suggestions. SteamDonkey, Powersteamguy guessed correctly that I was referring to an early Atlas GP-7.

Actually, I just realized that a better question might be would my older WP GP-7 body fit on the newer DCC friendly Atlas mechanism?

    Thanks again!
