Remember, optical media (CD's and DVD's) burned on your computer probably have a life of 2-3 years max...don't use them for long term storage. Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
Leo and all, I was going to move all my VHS train tapes to DVD so that they would last forever, but now I learn that foever is not! What media can a guy use to save his tapes? Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
From what I have read you should be able to get 20-100 years from a CD-R/DVD-R given proper storage and usage. Click Here Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
Due to a lack of new photos due to the crash, and the lack of time to get the PC to a shop,(To hopefully fix or retrive photos), I may be awaile getting a new class up. But don't worry, if worse come's to worse, I'll dig into the RailImages archives and pull a rabbit out of the hat. I'm still just sick to my stomach over losing so many good photos!
There are differing qualities of CD and DVD disks you can buy. A longer term archival type will cost more. But they do last a lot longer. Boxcab E50 Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
Sounds like it would definitely be worth while, to pay a professional firm. Try to recover these. Boxcab E50 Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
Leo, where did you get the info that CD and DVD's burned on your computer will only last a couple of years? I, like others, am in the process of copying all of my original railfan videotapes to DVD's. I certainly hope they will last longer. I also think the panic over magnetic tape failing is overrated. I have some audio tapes that are almost as old as I am (and I am old) that are still good. Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
