Gosh, obviously a diesel railcar, but I have never seen any of these. They are not shown in my SBB stock book. Maybe would be in a newer version.

Any idea which directions it was going to/from? I thought all lines around there were electrified

I will have to sit down with the wife and look at the map to see if I can get you a better location & direction.

I'm not sure if there is any more in the video or not. At this point I slowly pulling them out as they were seen, so the next few at least will be more Switzerland related as we heaed towards Italy.

Believe it not this wasn't a Railfan trip but I tried to keep the video handy as we went down the road in our tour bus to catch a few rail shots along the way. Some are not worth showing as they went by so fast they are just a blur at the single frame level.

Those look like standard Swiss MkII coaches darren, but of the same basic design as the mystery railcar.

OK, lets see if I can describe this and I think maybe we both will have it.

We were on route from Paris France to Luzern Switzerland. If I read our route map correctly we passed through Mulhouse France and into Basel Switzerland. This clip was taken just before we reached Basel. Based on some maps I found online tonight (see links below) we must have been between Basel St. Johann and Basel SBB so this would, I would think, be the train heading "South East" along side the route we travelled.

These PDF files are a bit large for dial-up but worth the wait if you want to see the railway system.

Nice photos Darren. Interesting switch design, looks safer than the standard design...no points to split and derail. It would be fun to model a rack railroad like that, especially with overhead electrical feed.

That last photo scares the dickens out of me. The driver announces "If you all look to left..." and the passengers quickly go to the windows and tip the car over.....

Good pics Darren. I love Swiss mountain railways, funiculars and gondolbahns/cable cars. Such wonderful views.

I usually take video to take in as much as possible, and also get the sound of the cogs on the rack [IMG] My video camera is not digital so cannot grab frames :(

From what I can tell from the maps it has to be a the train that runs between Basel St. Johann and Basel SBB since that is the only train on the map in that area. As for what train that is I have no idea either right now. Maybe someone else will figure this out for us some day.

Your last photo sequence post points out what an eloquent challenge it would be to model that route accurately, and what fun!
Sadly most viewers, except those among us who are modeling nerds, would not understand the elegance they were seeing...

An exceptionally beautiful country - and the trains are amazing [IMG]

    Darren,
Although you can't see them in your shots I am pretty certain that the route would have been electrified with overhead wires.
The train is a multi-voltage Swiss Federal Railways unit and consists of an unpowered driving car (as shown in your shots) a number of intermediate cars (usually refurbished EW1 and EW2 cars) and a powered driving car (classified as RBDe562)
These trains are used in the Basel area and can operate under both the Swiss and French power supplies.
There are pictures here RailnetEurope Picture Gallery

    Hope this helps.
    John

Thanks John, I forgot we had a Swiss fan here [IMG] That makes more sense, I could not believe the Swiss would use DMU's [IMG]

It's a great ride up this mountain and in places the slope is 45+ Degrees that this train climbs with easy.
