Whilst scanning some old slides (from the 1970's) I came across this one of a class 47 storming through Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Note the interesting overhanging signalbox.
Would that have been a Midland express going the "long way round" to or from Nottingham? Or have I got the route wrong and it is something like a cross-country semi fast passing through Leicester? Ben
Not sure Ben. Not the usual type of equipment seen on the Leicester-Peterborough route, so I suspect that it may have been a Nottingham-Corby-Kettering etc. train. Like you say, a midland line train going thr long way round. Although the only significant additional place it would serve would be Corby.
Am I right that this was a joint line, not a purely MR line - so that the signal box shows more LNWR architectural origins than Midland?
Don't know much about the heritage of this line. Foreign territory to me But you are right, the box does not look very "Midland"!
Alan Are you sure that photo is from the 70's ? I dont remember Sulzer's having those headlamps then and I'm sure we still used the front number box's in those days-----also that huge arrow on the side-----? Happy new year Steve
You are probably right Steve, must be somewhat later! I was scanning other 70's slides, so I assumed it was also the same period. I must check back and see if I have a correct date.
