Nah! It's that many of us HO scalers are really closet N scalers that are too afraid to admit it! We sneak over to the N scale forum when nobody is looking ...
I'm an N scaler now, but I used to have an HO layout when I was in high school. I still have all of my equipment, too, just can't seem to tear myself away from it!
Well, leave it to me to do things backward. This past weekend I bought my first HO scale locomotive: a Spectrum 4-6-0. I'm am N-scaler but have grown tired of waiting for a Ten Wheeler in N. - Thank's to TurtleRidge for the encouragement after my inquiry. I am very pleased with this acquisition and look forward to getting a small layout up and running.
It' s always a struggle when I visit the local hobby shops - I'm in N, HO, and dabble in O - and they all know it. They just love to tempt and torture me with new items from all scales.
I'm jealous! I want about 4 of those of the Southern paint, low-boiler version for my future 1904 Ashville Division layout...
I did the same thing when the LL 080 came out. It was just too pretty to pass up. Now I am oggling those ten wheelers also. The NYC highboiler version really catches my eye. SO far I have resisted a few years without getting one.
I held out as long as I could. Spectrum had announced the locomotive in N but then postponed it because of lack of a suitable motor. So I waited. And waited. Finally, the LHS had such a good deal I could no longer resist. I walked away from the display case 4 times trying to talk myself out of it, but on the 5th time, the guy took the #, went up to the stock room and that was that. I knew I was a gonner when I put it on the test track. Can't swear that they have any of the Southerns left, they may, but I didn't notice. They still had some NYC's though, as well as high boiler painted /undec. The one I got was a low boiler painted / undec. I'm pleased as can be with how she looks. They are $79. on the website, if you're interested, the dealer is Kleins. I still hope that B-Mann's produce an N scale version, though..... But I guess I have taken my first real step as a two-scaler!
Ah, yes...the Bachmann 4-6-0... and the 2-8-0 as well. If there's anything that will lead me to The Dark Side, it'll be those two!
<font color="336633">Welcome to Trainboard Thomas! or should I say Välkommen to Trainboard! (I think thats swedish)
According to JRR Tolkien, N scale is halfling scale and HO scale would be mortal scale and O scale would be perhaps ogre scale?
Welcome to TrainBoard Tompaah, we are glad to have you join in our fun here together regardless of scale! Just between you and me, I haven't quite figured out how the guys that model in more then one scale couple an N scale engine to their HO cars and run them on O scale track! But its their railroad, so if that's what floats their boat, who am I to throw rocks?
This is a little bit different definition of mixing scales. Some 30 years ago, a gentlmen in Fort Worth named Latimore had a great HO layout in a barn. I really admired his layout--- and his barn. I know it is a shame but, when I built a model of his barn in N scale, I couldn't figure out how to build N scale models of HO trains. I cheated and modeled his trains as N scale models of Lionel O gauge.
Hi Kenneth L. , were you there when the string of cars broke loose up in Mr. Latimore's barn, rolled back down that long outside grade and flew out the window to the ground below? I stopped by a day or two later, we were in the local NMRA club together back then. When he died, that group sort of fizzled out and I often wondered what happened to all his train stuff.
When I was in N scale, I talked a lot - now I am in HO scale, I say very little. Still don't seem to be getting much work done on the layout though
