First you have to pass a test!

    EXAMINATION FOR LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERS.

Ques. 1.—What are the principal duties of an engineer before attaching his engine to the train?

Ques. 2.—What are his duties before leaving with train?

After you post your answers, you can check them HERE.

    No peeking

If you get 100% correct on all the answers you can consider yourself hired. Report to the Union Hall on Monday.

#1 check all the systems to make sure they are in operating condition. This includes fuel.

#2 check that the breaks work.

    am I close?

    1. Make sure that it the correct train and that the
    train is ready to go.

    2. Have his route planned.

Steam, diesel, or electric? What rulebook are we following? What era does this take place in?

Nobody should "fail" because the original poster has failed to properly explain the assignment.

After reading some replies this thread is so wrong...

On any major system a yard crew would couple the power to the train and move it to the departure tracks at the train's originating terminal. A crew getting on enroute wouldn't even have to worry about this as the crew coming into the yard will usually do swtiching at terminals enroute if they have time. Checking fuel? I know of plenty of trains that have had some or all units run out of fuel on the road on account of a yard crew sending them out without servicing because of the need to keep terminal dwell to a minimum. Then there's the matter of "picking the route"... which the dispatcher would be in control of.

    Brian,

Would it help if you knew that the questions were taken from a book Titled:
    The LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE
    Running and Management
    by Angus Sinclair
    Seventeenth Edition - 1890

It seems that Mr. sinclair was concerned with the education and qualifications of the firemen that were expecting to be promoted to the position of engineer. so he devised a complete plan for their training and printed what is a study guide for those seeking to prove their compentency.

The following is a quotation from CHAPTER XXVII. which was the EXAMINATION FOR LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERS.

THE following examination code is partly made up from the manuals in use for the xamination of firemen on several of our most progressive railroads and partly by the author of this book. Any fireman who can give an intelligent nswer to the greater part of these questions is likely to pass for promotion. The wording of the answers is not generally considered of any consequence so long as the candidate for promotion shows that he understands the subject properly. The form of questions is seldom closely adhered to, and the examiner usually makes sure that the candidate has not merely committed the answers to memory without understanding the matters they relate to. A candidate studying these questions would do well, to read carefully what is said in the body of this book about the different subjects. The Table-of-Contents may be used as a reference-table to direct where information can be found.

A little history is a good thing.

    1) turn on the digitrax system
    2) make sure all the switches are lined properly.

    Drive a train???

This obviously was the rulebook used by the railroads that went under in the panic of 1893.

I think the meaning of 'FIRE' in some locomotive cabs has changed a bit since that was written.

I better study a while before the test.

    Question 1/

Ascertain from the crew caller who your conductor is. If you dont like him/her,then mark off. If you didn't mark off, hang up,roll over, set your nap timer to the last possible
moment that enables you to get to work on time.
When you get to work read newspaper, BS with the guys in the register room, OH BTW go out to the ready track , inspect locos, make sure there is enough water,TP and paper towels.

Question 2/ finish reading newspaper, adjust
seat to proper heigh & recline, read track bulletins & track warrants, figger out how to get some "Initial Terminal Delay" or "Run Around" arbitraries, make sure conductor has
enough reading material for the trip, make sure you both have sufficient lunch items for 12 hrs. If not, ask hostler or brakeman(if you have one) to run across the street to the quick mart for extra supplies, this will also enable you to add extra minutes to "I.T.D." and cover it by "making adjustements to M.U. cables and hoses".

Dunno 'bout you other guys, but this routine always worked for me!

    My answers were:

#1 Make sure you are fit (enough sleep, no alcohol, etc..) for work

    #2 Brake test

I missed a bunch of "additional items" for #1, but I think I got the intent.
