I am setting my time scale at 1996, would a western Superliner train be in phase III or IV? What type of loco's to use? And were MHC's and baggage cars used on the same trains? Thanks, I was in Jr High back then and did not take many pictures nor did I get out that much.

Not sure about phases and all haven't kept up on what people call what. But from my memory, which keeps getting shorter and shorter. The loco's would have been F-40's but P-38's could also be seen. No P-40 or 42's Bag cars were still used and the old MHC were used but no Amboxes. Depending on what train you model the Builder carried all the above mentioned where as the Pioneer carried no bag car or MHC they ran with a coach bag car

    From Kato's site:

So it looks like you could do P42's in Phase III to either emulate a P40 or a brand new late delivery 1996 P42.

Looks like the first 100 or so of the P42's were delivered in Phase III, so I assume (maybe incorrectly) that you wouldn't see Phase IV Superliners in 1996 since that is when the P42's started being delivered.

Looks like the Amtrak boxcars started showing up mid/late 1997 so they're out.

1996 Amtrak, this is what you are looking at:
    Motive Power
    F40PHs
    P32s phIII
    P40s phIII
    AND
P32BWHs (DASH-8s in pepsi can colors)

Superliners are mostly phIII although I think near the end of 96 phIVs started showing up.
As far as MHCs and baggage cars, they certainly did run together. And on both east and western trains. if MHCs are your thing, the SW Chief used have about 5 or 6 of them back when Amtrak was marketing express trak services. Check out the pictures below.

My wife and I rode the Coast Starlight in August 1996 and the train had all brand new Superliner II's in phase IV paint. As I recall, our power was a P40 and F40 in Phase III paint. We also rode the Southwest Chief in October 1995 from Chicago to Flagstaff and our sleeper (Michigan, I think) was a Phase IV car. All of the other cars were SL I's.

I believe the SL II's were built sleepers first, diner and lounge cars second, and finally the coaches.

Cool link! So the PhIV Superliner II's were around a while prior to the Genesis units. I wonder why they didn't paint the P40's in PhIV from the git-go?

My guess would be to keep the train sets as matched as possible.

    Paint.

The Red White and Blue is going away, someone up in the Corp. wanted New Branding. So now we have the dull Blue and the " Fag-Flag" Logo. Also Amtrak has just changed back to Imron paint. The water base didn't hold up worth a damn.
