In need of review!!!

    For the first time I was able to computer generate a layout design. Now I need your help. I need to know what is wrong and what is right. It is N scale. The layout will depict a shortline in the late 80's. It will be small but will work hard. I plan to run an RS2 or two. I would like to have a little street running. The sidings are sudject to change. I need your help.

    The design looks pretty good, the only suggestion I have is the yard on the right hand side should be longer, I would move the industry higher and make the yard longer.

    Looks like you will indeed be busy. The switching chores will keep a crew hopping.

    I do agree with Paul. His suggestion is good. The yard at right side may be a little bit restricted.

    Paul, I can only make the yard as long as my longest side. I only plan to run with five or six cars at a time. I've worked with smaller yards before and I like them. But I will keep it in mind.

    I thought over what you guys said. I asked myself what would look better, a loco and six cars over the long bridge or a loco and 15 cars over the long bridge. HELLO!!! So I lenghted the two sidings and the yard. I'm not too sure about the engine facility though. What do you guys think?

    well id make it longer lol BUT why not move the industry further near the curve then off the yard you could put a engine sevice facility and a yard lead?

    With a lead yard you can switch the yard without effecting the mainline and with an engine yeard you can store locomotives.

    The only critisism is you want the engine sidings to be round the opposite way so you can detach an engine and switch into the yard, it's a good improvement though

    David, I like the design a lot. It looks like it has a fair amount of variety and activity available. My only suggestion would be a turntable near the yard so that you can change a locos direction. If I'm reading it correctly, there is no turnabout.

    I just broke down after all of the recomendations on the various boards and bought the John Armstrong book, "Track Planning for Realistic Operations". (or something like that. ) He really has some marvelous suggestions for yards.

    You are correct Jacob. I have no turntable. I will take that into consideration though.

    On his layout I'm not looking for a large yard. I'm look for something small. I've worked with yards that only have four or five tracks. I enjoyed it.
    I have reworked the yard once more. I put the engine facility to the left yard with an escape through the engine facility. I have added what I think will become sidings in the industries. Some could even be used as overflow tracks for the yard. The sidings are subject to change.

    All in all your design is excellent for switching and will give you a lot of enjoyment.
