Got around to doing some work on the lumber merchant industry. Decided to go with Evergreen clapboard.

The pic shows progress so far, the wood decking is real wood and is just laid in place temporarily until completion and painting.

Looking up at the roof. Just the basic beams in so far, much more bracing to add in the roof and the walls.

A 40ft boxcar inside. Question: would there be a bumper post in here, or maybe one embedded in the concrete wall at the dock end?

This is supposed to be just a part of the lumbermill, and I am leaving the side open as though it was sliced off, to enable viewing and photography [IMG]

Wow Alan that's a nice structure. I worked for several years loading plywood into boxcars and I would have loved a loading dock like that. We had a spur where box cars were stationed along side the building. We had to open doors on the building and load the cars outside. It was a mess when it rained, but the show had to go on.

Thanks Stone:) My mill will also have outside loading platforms, both sides of the incoming track. These will be made entirely from wood.

How would lumber be loaded into boxcars in the 50's? By hand?

I'd think so.....my father worked in a creosote mill that primarily made cross ties and he never spoke of a forklift.

    Alan,
Most of the inside loading docks I have seen have had the bumper mounted right in the concrete if there was concrete, otherwise they would have some makeshift type of bumper or wheel stop.
Good job so far on the building, but why didn't you make the whole building out of wood?

I guess I am lazy, and Evergreen styrene is much guicker  It will be painted anyway, on the outside.

Really, I had the clapboard to hand and wanted to get on with it. I have so much to do on the layout I needed to get the building moving asap.

Matt says he has some suitable spare Northeastern lumber strip so I will make the outside loading platforms all in wood. [IMG]

I will make a custom bumper post. [IMG]

Not sure yet Wolfgang. I am hoping someone will give me some tips as to what to put inside :D

Maybe some piles of lumber ready for loading, maybe racks for different sizes of lumber? I will be able to set up some scenes of loading the cars (when I acquire some people)!
