I recently acquired my first sheet of (blue) foam board. Am wondering what you all use to cut it down into working sizes? Something that gives a nice smooth cut. Is there a common tool in your tool box? Rather than buying a special cutter? Am not talking about the sculpting portion of the job. Boxcab E50
I used two things; The first is a very cheap wire foam cutter that runs on a D cell battery. These can be found in any big commercial craft store. (Don't inhale the fumes when using this tool). The other tool I used is the blade from a tile stripper. It's like a big single edged razor blade but is 4" long. Wrap a little bit of tape around the end of the blade that you are going to hold to keep from cutting your hand.
I used a bread knife to cut mine. It was a 2" thick piece, so it was difficult to get the knife through, but the cut was almost perfect. A little sanding will take out the bump I left.
Boxcab, glad to see you are getting started. I use a snap blade razor knife. If you extend the blade all the way out you can cut through a 2" board!!
Thanks everyone for the hints! Andy- Not quite ready to start. Just getting everything lined up. Once I am ready to start, I want to keep quickly rolling along! Boxcab E50
I also use a snap blade box cutter. Another thing I like to use is a hack saw blade. I does make some foam dust but can really cut fast. A fish fillet knife works great also.
I use the Woodland Scenics "Foam Knife". It's a lightweight, alluminum knife, with a 2-2 and a half inch (I think!) blade that's removable.
