I received it in the mail the other day. It happens to be pretty good, especially the "bonus" stuff and the downloadable pdf files.

I am going to give it a whirl once I ascertain what the price of the next video might be.

I got one of those also, but sent it back. Personal opinion, but I'm not a big fan of unsolicited stuff with a reply needed to cancel. I don't know why they're trying this, and I hope they don't try again.

I received the DVD too. Maybe I didn't read the info that came with it properly but I thought all of them were going to be $9 plus shipping and handling.

I was suprised to find it in the mail the other day but after reviewing it I agree that it is pretty good.

I called Kalmbach about it, to find out how much the subsequent DVDs were going to cost. They told me $19.95, plus $4.95 shipping.

I watched it last night with my sons. They liked it (at least until I sent them to bed! :( ). There's a lot of interesting info in it. The painting and scenicking clips were good, but maybe a little short. The model railroad layout segments were really good. I did notice that many of the segments were somewhat dated, due to either who was doing the presentation (none of the MR presenters work for Kalmbach any longer) and the Northlandz segment obviously was from a few years ago.

Still, this series has promise. If Kalmbach can continue to produce new segments to go along with the older ones in their library, the series could be worth the investment.

[IMG] I'm lost here. Is this something special going out to subscribers? MRR being Model railroader magazine? Sounds as though it's coming in, unsolicited?

My copy of the DVD came on Monday. I've hadn't had a chance to look at it yet, but will do so today.

    Don't forget the bonus additions.
Eagle- I agree on the unsolicited mailings. I will, though, make an exception here. I liked the video and will watch it again. I will receive at least one more. the $25.00 is a small investment to pick up tips for something you will touching daily.

I liked the segment on painting the backdrop. I also listened carefully. Demonstrator used masonite but recommended styrene since it will not shrink or expand with humidity. I purchased 2 2x4 styrene sheets at HD for one side of a backdrop. I will report with pictures as I get 'er done. The sheets were inexpensive and in the contracting area of HD. They are the things that they use to cover flourescent fixtures when doing a ceiling.

Boxcab- Perhaps you didn't get it since MRR demographics show a paucity of AC current in northern Montana ?

I got one in the mail this week. Watched it Tuesday night.

The backdrop segment and the peice on the George Sellio's Franklin and South Manchester were pretty darn good.

For $9 bucks I'll keep it. I too was "annoyed" it came unsolicited, but I am glad I have it. I will deal w/ subsequent DVD's on their own merit.

    But this one is good.

What thickness styrene sheets did you buy at HD for the backdrops?

    Bob-

They were pretty thin. I will ATTEMPT to accurately measure and advise tonight. If tag states thickness, I will trust them and report thickness stated.

It will, though, need either bracing or a rough frame to prevent buckling. It is why I also purchased 1x2's. I figured that one out on my own. On the checkout line, someone was purchasing Lexan brand plastic. It rang up at $9.97 for a rather small piece, but at least it was rigid. If this doesn't work out with the frame, I will go with the Viagra enhanced styrene and purchase a piece both longer and wider than the one I observed.

Are you going to try and paint a scene on the styrene or are you going to use wallpaper (Clouds & sky) and paste the wallpaper to the styrene?

    Mark-

If that's true, the boys at Clambake need to get outdoors now and then. We have so much, we sell most AC to California...... Without us, Hollyweird would be out of business.

Hydroelectric dams, coal and coal plants everywhere. Capped oil wells all across mid-state...... That's why we call places by names such as Colstrip, and Petroleum County.....

Yup. We've not had an Indian attack since last year..... Well, I need to go out, and dig for a new outhouse.... Where's my chaw'n backy? They say we get indoor plumbing in a couple more years. [IMG]

Montana Man- Is the plug of chewing tobacco for those times when Pepto- Bismol is just not enough?

Bob- 1/16" thick and I will be painting it myself and doing some distant hills and trees, etc. before I give up and get the wallpaper.

Are you going to paint by numbers or are you going to connect the dots? [IMG] :D [IMG] [IMG]

What DVD are you guy's talkin' about? [IMG] I got a free one with a magazine I picked up at the grocery store. It was all about layout basics and Michael Gross was narrating a layout from start to finish. [IMG]

    Kurt- sounds the same.

NOW, comes the insult. They send you an unsolicted DVD. They ASK for you to either pay $9.00 or return it so they can "send it to someone else", or keep it and not pay for it. I decided to pay and keep. Postage for the return of the DVD was prepaid. The stamp for the envelope to pay the $9.00 was my task.

As a bit of an aside and probably skirting around some of the rules here in Peaceful Valley for those of you familiar with how things happen here and on the A board N scale forum, please see the companion thread there to the DVD topic.

I like it here without the soapboxes in evidence.
